F&P Eson 2 mask-swivel sticks
F&P Eson 2 mask-swivel sticks
<t>I am currently using a ResMed N20 with its attached short light-weight mini-hose which I think is a fantastic improvement. I like the mask but it leaks at high pressure and I now have a trial of the Fisher & Paykel Eson2. When I turn in bed, the hose, of course, follows. The Eson2 mask swivel (attached to the hose after the 90 degree vent and hose swivel) jams, sticks and jerks just a little and as a result, pulls on the mask. It is really annoying and it sometimes starts a small leak. Of course, once the swivel gets moving, it moves freely. I guess I could get used to it.

In fairness, the N20 mask swivel only swivels in one plane. The Eson2 mask swivel swivels in all directions.

Any other Eson (2) users out there? Have you experienced this? Does the swivel loosen up? I don't want to use any lube on the swivel right away but I would like to hear if anyone else did and how it worked out. Did the original Eson have the same mask swivel?

Re: F&P Eson 2 mask swivel sticks
I've been using this mask for about a week now and have issues anytime I turn. Driving me nuts. Leaks everything I turn head to side or go from back to side sleeping. I can't seem to get it to stop unless I put the mask on so tight it hurst like a b.

The same thing has been happening to me.

I thought I was alone.

Re: F&P Eson 2 mask swivel sticks
The Eson2 has a reputation of being able to avoid leaks without being tightened too much? That is what I got from the reviews. I would guess it is because the flaps or "pillows" if you could call them that, are large or "full" (in comparison at least to the ResMed N20). I would really like this mask to work for me because I think I want a mask to fit "lightly". I disabled the Eson2 mask swivel with thin strips of painters tape wrapped around the "top" of the swivel, making sure not to cover the vent. It is a loaner so I can't use goop. Then I roped a belt of elastic around my tummy and tied the hose loosely to the belt in the center. The idea is to prevent the hose from pulling on the mask due to slight movement. Seems to work ok as long as you sleep like a log, which I thought I did. Last night was not good however, ----major leaks. I was thinking of trying a very thin smear of Vaseline as a lubricant on the mask swivel. What do you think?

Greasing the squeaky part is a very old tradition.
Go ahead and do it.
I used Lansinoh, because it is extremely thick and gooey (high viscosity)
Vaseline is too thin--Lansinoh is like axle grease.
I used dental floss to get it into the joint.

It seems the more nights I get into this mask the more I fight leaks. I can’t seem to find the right adjustments. Turning my head to side or turning to sleep on my side causes leaks eventually. They aren’t registering as leaks but it always blows on my eye. Pretty sure most my wake ups are leaks. Be it from hearing it or dealing it.

I agree. Every time I see it, my mind says it is "swizzle". My many years as a bar tender has taken a toll on me.

I use the N-20 at high pressure. If you lightly pull the cushion away from your nose after the air is turned on and let it fill with air then tuck it under a little across the bridge of the nose as you set it back in place it cuts down on the leaks. Also not sure what size cushion you use but when I went down a size from medium to small it helped. The Eson's plastic forehead piece turned out to be a no go for me.
Btw yes I keep seeing at swizzle sticks too.

Baby: do you mean by "tuck it under": establish the edge of the flap on the bridge of the nose and then push the nose cushion upwards to create the seal?

Not exactly but close. When you lift the cushion to fill it with air as you set it back down on your nose I sort of roll or tuck the edge flap down a little under the rest of the cushion.

Re: F&P Eson 2 mask swivel sticks
Here are some pictures to hopefully help.
It leaks from this little spot. I make sure its tucked or rolled in, when the cushion inflates.

Re: F&P Eson 2 mask-swivel sticks
I use a Sleepweaver 3D mask with a swivel. It has the same problem of sticking when it is supposed to rotate. I called Cicadience and asked about lubrication. They said absolutely do not lubricate any part of the mask.
Mine often needs a little manual persuasion to swivel as it should.

Re: F&P Eson 2 mask-swivel sticks
I put a small amount of Vaseline on the F & P Eson2 Mask-swivel with a q-tip and it made a huge difference to the swivel action; still some slight hesitation but no more jerking. But that didn't last that long. By morning the problem was again apparent but not in any way as bad as it was originally. The ResMed N20 has 3 separate swivels. The mask-swivel: roll; the vent-swivel: pitch; the hose-swivel: yaw (from the standpoint of the eyes) The Eson2 combines the first 2/4 degrees of freedom in one ball bearing swivel and it seems to grab at the edges. Is the Sleepweaver engineered with only two swivels too?
