Anyone lose your voice shortly after starting?

Post by ITeach » Tue Mar 08, 2005 6:05 pm

I am a teacher and do a lot of talking. I lost my voice 2 times last fall when I was sick, but now I feel okay but have lost my voice again. I am using the Remstar Pro w/CFlex and Ultra Mirage FF Mask and heated humidifier on 5, but I still wake up feeling really dry. I've been at it for 3 weeks and for first 2 felt much better. Even my allergies improved quite a bit through breathing the filtered air. But, here I am week three with a scratchy throat and no voice. Any suggestions? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for all your great suggestions and responses to others. I lurked very frequently prior to really jumping on board a few days ago.

Are you certain your heated humidifier is turned on? At 5, you should be experiencing rainout, unless you keep your house/bedroom REALLY warm (or unless you have a heated hose).

With the Remstar, you have to turn on the H/H separately from the machine. You press the "Humidity" button (I think that's what it's called, from memory it's the upper of the two buttons on the left side of the thing).

If the humidifier is actually on, a little light (I think green) will be on at the base of it, just below the water container...

(I assume you're putting water into the container, right?)

Liam, who's all wet.

Yes, I am having plenty of humidity in the hose overnight. The reservoir starts full and ends empty at the end of the night. My lips and mouth are much less dry than prior to starting therapy. They also started the humidity at 3 and I turned it up because I have really bad allergies and my nose is irritated most of the time anyway. That has actually improved quite a bit.

Thanks for all of your help, though. I saw my family doc tonight and he gave me referrals to the ENT and another to my neuro who ordered the therapy. Hopefully the ENT will be able to tell what's up right away.

I'm just tired of figuring out one thing and having another pop up. Oh, well. At least I'm awake to enjoy my kids in the evening and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, instead of asleep on the couch with them jumping on me. Thanks again for all of your support.

No rainout for me at #5

Post by Grant I » Tue Mar 08, 2005 10:02 pm

I have the same equipment as ITeach. I also have my humidifier set at 5 (thanks to you guys here--I didn't know it was adjustable...) My bedroom is 70 degrees, and I never have rainout--never even use more than 1-1.5" of water in the tank in 6-8 hours. Is my almost 2-yr old unit dying? Let me know now, as I see the doc Thursday to demand switching to APAP, and was going to keep the old humidifier. I'll make them replace the whole kit & kaboodle!!
