I am going over my PSG's and have a few questions about Stage shifts. The PSG's are almost 10 yrs apart, the first inicating 74 stage changes and the most recent shows 79.Both results both show a total of zero stage 3 and 4.
What is a common(healthy )number of stage shifts? And how do you manage/improve this?

Okay, Limestone, I'll bite! What is a PSG, and what is a stage shift. I've never heard either term.

I'm not a Doctor, nor am I associated with the medical profession in any way. Any comments I make are just personal opinions. Take them or leave them. (justa don't gripe at me if ya donna like 'em!)

PSG = PolySomnoGraph (or Polysomnogram depending on who you ask). It's a sleep study.Sleepy-eyes wrote:Okay, Limestone, I'll bite! What is a PSG, and what is a stage shift. I've never heard either term.
Stage shift = A change in sleep stages. There are 5 stages of sleep: 1 through 4 and REM.
A normal night should look like this:

Many people have trouble getting down to stage 3 and 4, especially in a sleep lab setting where you're in a strange place with wires all over the place and most likely an uncomfortable bed.

Chris,
Sorry for the confusion,I was just copying what was on the report. Most of this stuff is as clear as mud for me and it was not intended to shock and amaze.
I am finding that this is a tough question and am hoping the answer lies with the experiences of our fellow hose heads and may offer me some improvement in my results.

Generally, About...
Stage changes normally occur at a rate of about 7 per hour of sleep. Abnormal stage changes can be addressed by identifying and correcting the arousal or awakening that caused them.

Aromatherapy may help CPAP compliance. Lavender, Mandarin, Chamomile, and Sweet Marjoram aid in relaxation and sleep. Nature's Gift has these and a blend of all four called SleepEase.

SAG ("StillAnotherGuest" on this board, aka "sleepydave" on that other board) said same thing plus a little more about "arousals" over there:
http://www.apneasupport.org/viewtopic.php?p=27820
"Stage changes occur normally (not caused by arousal) about 7 times per hour, 40-50 times per night in a "normal" night's sleep, perhaps a few more in the first 90 minute sleep cycle, let's say 11 and maybe a few more after that due to "lab effect". I've seen the number 70-75 stage changes as "normal" during a first-night sleep study.
An arousal will often cause a stage change, but that's not a requirement, and there's plenty of cases where that won't happen, so you can have a bunch of arousals not reflected in the stage changes."
