High Blood Pressure and Sleep Apnia

Post by timba56 » Tue Jun 18, 2019 8:38 am

New to this forum. I’m a 63 yr old male. 5’11” 190. My BP has always been a bit high. Tried all the standard ways of controlling this condition before finally going on meds. Recently a medical practitioner suggested a sleep study. I’d like to hear success stories from the folks on this site how a CPAP enabled them to get off their BP meds. I’ve CrossFitted for 5 years hoping my BP would become normal without success. I hate being on medication. Thanks in advance for the responses.

Cpap most often brings BP down, but how much for who is not specific.

When sleep apnea is the cause for the high blood pressure then effective cpap therapy will most likely reduce the BP.
Unfortunately sleep apnea isn't always the lone cause for the high blood pressure and if that's the case the best cpap therapy in the world won't be much help.
It is a good place to start though...might be one of the lucky ones whose high blood pressure is from sleep apnea and getting that taken care of will take care of the BP. If you have OSA...you need cpap anyway...going to have to use it anyway.

I don't want to read anything into your short post, so I'll ask. Are you making "BP-medication-free" a requirement for you to start using CPAP?

Becoming medication free isn't a requirement for me. I was hoping that others had experienced success getting off meds using this device. That is my wish. But is it a requirement? Nope.

I hope I'm one of the lucky ones too. Thanks for the response.

I'm 63, too. CPAP and weight loss -- my waist-to-height-ratio dropped from 0.68 to 0.51 -- reduced my blood pressure by 70 points from 180 to 110. Couldn't be happier more. It took about half a year to achieve that progress.

Best of luck! Maybe we will see you updating this thread someday to say your blood pressure has normalized without the need for medication. Or, worse case, you have accepted that medication is a blessing.

Went from family's genetic low BP (I used to get light-headed if got up too quickly) to 210/115 when diagnosed with OSA. Took me 18 months to get off Cozzar and a few more years to get off diuretic (much, too much wt to lose). BP runs around 120-130/70. I was also take 400-600 mgms magnesium citrate/day. Now I take a mix of magnesium: magtein (crosses blood brain barrier), taurate, citrate. Magnesium helps smooth muscle tissue relax.
