First day, already a struggle

Post by colomom » Thu Jun 13, 2019 8:07 pm

I'm not a total newbie to the world of sleep apnea; my son, mom, and brother all have OSA. This forum has been a great help in dialing in their treatment.
Although I've been down this road with family members, my own diagnosis is new.
A brief history:
As a healthy 44 year old female with a BMI of 18.6, my doctor was reluctant to order a sleep study because I don't fit the stereotype. I finally talked the doc into overnight oximetry, which led to an in home sleep study and a diagnosis of moderate OSA. My doc didn't order an in lab titration; instead I get an APAP with the typical wide open pressure range, the doc also ordered a follow up oximetry test in 14 days into using the APAP.
I picked up my new ResMed Airsense 10 APAP and Brevida pillow mask today. Because I have bad allergies breathing thru my nose can sometimes be difficult, but I hope to make a nasal mask work (if not i'll try something else).
I tried to follow the standard advise of starting out by using the APAP while watching TV but it makes me feel like I am suffocating. I've already raised the minimum pressures (including ramp) to 6.4, the increased pressure helped but I still feel air starved. Is the feeling of air starvation a normal part of adjusting to CPAP? Should I raise the minimum until I feel I am getting enough air or leave it alone for a few days to give my body time to adjust?

You can raise the minimum even more and/or add in EPR to see if more air movement lets you feel less air hunger.

I don’t have the expertise to advise about pressures, but I can share my own experience, which is that I feel short on air under around 7.4. Part of the reason is that I just don’t like a lower IPAP, and part is because I like getting the full benefit of my EPR of 3. Do you have EPR set to 3? If so, you won’t get full EPR until you’re at 7.

(I see Pugsy just posted about this, so go for it!)

One way or another, I hope you have a decent night tonight. Tell us tomorrow how it went.

If possible, also download Oscar, import data from your SD card, and post your charts. Oscar is here:

It might be helpful to read the guide first.
