Reading Instructions

Post by babydinosnoreless » Fri May 31, 2019 10:37 am

So I never actually read the instruction book for my mask before. Now I am confused. I thought I understood the difference between Nasal and Pillow and Full Face masks. My N-20 was clearly a Nasal Mask or so I thought.

Well the DME sent me a new N-20 mask (yay I now have a back up of everything) and it came with an instruction book. Which I decide to read.

So for my nasal mask I am supposed to select pillows ? :?:

It's not going to make a huge amount of difference (if any at all) whether you choose nasal or pillows with your N20 mask.
These choices have to do with the generic vent rate that gets subtracted prior to leak reporting and the inherent resistance in any mask.
The resistance between the N20 nasal cushion must not be all that different from the pillows masks and the vent rate is probably also very similar. Most vent rates are very close anyway.

Technically....I guess pillows is the choice per ResMed but I bet if you change your selection choice from nasal to pillows...you won't see or feel any difference.
Heck...I used the setting for pillows when I was trying out the DreamWear full face mask for 4 nights before I remembered to change it...and I saw nothing change anywhere after I made the change. Felt the same and the leak reporting really didn't change all that much either (beyond normal nightly variances anyway).

I think it used to be a bit more critical that mask selection actually match the mask type but doesn't appear to be so much anymore.
I try to match it up when I can but if I don't get it done I don't lose any sleep over it.
I am still trying to figure out which setting I should be using for the Bleep.  It's actually neither a traditional nasal cushion mask or a nasal pillow mask. I left the selection to pillows from when I was using the P10. It works out fine.

One thing I know the mask type setting does is help the machine more accurately deliver the proper pressure to your nose.

Everything between the blower an the nose affects the pressure, because of changes to the total resistance to airflow.

If there's a humidifier, an AB filter, a thin vs regular hose, a longer hose, and.... the type of mask.

Some of these have a fairly big effect (regular vs slim hose). (set your machine to 'slimline' while using a regular hose, you'll really notice the pressure difference... at least, I did).

The mask type is a small difference, but it does make a difference in the pressure, though it's less than 1cm difference. (I measured it with a manometer)

Just Resmed trying to get the most accurate treatment pressure.

Respironics copied it with their "system one resistance" setting with the S1 60 series machines...
