Pain and AHI
Pain and AHI
Curious if pain affects AHI.
I hurt my shoulder this week and my AHI is thru the roof.
Thanks in advance

Re: Pain and AHI
Are you taking meds for it - they're far more likely to be at fault.
Re: Pain and AHI
In a round about way but not the airway itself.
Pain can cause poor sleep...lots of tossing and turning and wake ups which increases the chances of SWJ sleep/wake/junk flagged events.
Not real events. The machine doesn't know sleep status. It just knows to measure air flow and our awake breathing if often much more irregular than our asleep breathing. The machine will flag those awake irregularities as some sort of apnea events.
Usually central/CA events but can also be OA and hyponea. I have personally seen SWJ in all the categories.
One night I had an AHI of 3.6 and not a single event was real. All the events were awake or arousal related. I wasn't asleep for a single one of the flagged events.
We have to be asleep or the apnea events to matter. Awake events simply don't count.
So pain can cause elevated AHI but not because it has really compromised the airway....but because pain causes crappy sleep.
Now sometimes medications taken for pain can impact the airway but for the most part I think higher AHI numbers are just false positives.

Im going to get my card out and look at sleepyhead. I noticed I am holding my breath quite a bit so it probably is SWJ.Pugsy wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 4:37 pmIn a round about way but not the airway itself.

Re: Pain and AHI
It does for me. Few years ago, I fell landing on one shoulder. Then, a month or so later, other shoulder decided to be frozen

I think my periodic 'much higher event' nights are likely due to pain.

Re: Pain and AHI
Thanks. I looked at my sleepyhead results and most of it was centrals. I believe I was awake and holding my breath a lot. Pillows under my shoulder blade and a heating pad on top of my shoulder has me feeling a little better now. This getting old crap is for the birdsMuse-Inc wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2019 9:18 pmIt does for me. Few years ago, I fell landing on one shoulder. Then, a month or so later, other shoulder decided to be frozen. I ended up on anti-inflammatories and sleeping on my back with pillows under shoulders to position with least pain. Events quadrupled and average pressure increased. Was a miserable 6+ months healing.

Re: Pain and AHI
It is indeed but it's probably better than the alternative.

In addition to the back and pelvic stuff my left shoulder is also giving me fits and that's the one I normally sleep on for side sleeping.
Damn thing hurts like a tooth ache even if I don't try to move my arm and a bad tooth ache at that. When I try to use it there is a little SOB inside the joint with a ice pick poking around. I would like to slap the crap out of him.
I don't think that pain makes the sleep apnea issues in terms of airway patency any worse but it does mess with our sleep which can give false positives for flagging of events which makes it look like the sleep apnea is worse when it's really our sleep itself that is worse.
Now some of the meds we might take to deal with that pain might be a different story in terms of airway patency.

I cant even pick up a cup of coffee with that arm right now. It just hangs down like a useless salami.
Old people problems!

Yes, as answered by the resident pros, pain can cause poor sleep, which in turn can make your AHI jump. I had surgery on March 1st and for the first few days, my AHI was even higher than it was during my sleep test. Presumably, I was tossing a turning all night long while in pain.
