Blocked tear ducts from using nasal pillows?

Post by Country4ever » Tue May 14, 2019 12:59 pm

I found one thread about this, but it's 5 years old. I've developed one watery eye. The doc's nurse told me to use artificial tears. The drops just run out, so I'm pretty sure it's a clogged tear duct. The first time I had it, I used baby shampoo several times a day on a cotton swab and massaged the closed eye. Then I made a "sock pillow" with flax seed and would warm that several times a day in the microwave and use it to warm the eye area. It cleared up for awhile, but is back again, and seems to not respond to the things that worked the first time.

I use the original swift nasal pillows and they do seem to push rather hard on the nose......which is where the tear ducts drain into. I'm wondering if that has affected anything. Also, the cpap air, even though it's humidified, seems to dry my nose out, so I'm wondering if the ducts are clogged from that end, or if my nasal pillows are pushing and obstructing the ducts?

Anyhow.....it's a real pain, added to all the other pains I'm having at age 69.

I really don't want surgery to correct this, so I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem and what has worked for them. I suppose I could change to a full face mask, but I don't like changes since it seems like all masks have their own particular problems. I could also go several days without using it and see if it helps.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

My P10 nasal pillows do not press hard on the nose. The new Bleep mask has no headgear so it would not apply any pressure.

Your tear ducts may not be blocked -- it might be the opposite -- the air may be coming in from the mask through the ducts and drying out your eyes.

My optometrist told me a tear is made of 3 parts -- an oil layer on the outside, water under that, and mucus on the inside. If the oil layer goes away, your eyes water. When the water evaporates, you are left with the mucusy stuff, and eye will feel gummy. My understanding is the artificial tears are supposed to help keep the oil layer present so you don't get watery eyes. I have had dry eyes from all types of masks, pillows, nasal and full face. Optometrist gave me a sample of Refresh Optive Advanced Lubricant Eye Drops to use once a day. They are a little thicker so they should stay a little longer than the regular Tears. You could try that. I use the Advanced Eye Drops either immediately before bed or immediately upon waking up, depending on how the eyes feel each day. I also continue to use the regular Refresh Tears as needed during the day.

I also decided to lower the max pressure to 12 on the machine because I can feel the air being blown into my eye sockets when the pressure is between 11 and 12. Not sure what your pressures or your AHI are, but maybe you could try it for a few nights.
