Tingling face

Post by wetcement » Tue May 07, 2019 2:07 pm

Hello,
I began cpap therapy a few months ago and have had all kinds of crazy issues such as a rash from one mask and over 30% air leak in all of the full face AirFit mask.
I have a deviated septum and can’t use nasal pillows.
My Dr suggested the dream wear full face mask. I began using it and was sleeping like a dream. 4 weeks into it I would wake up with tingling much like my face had been asleep on both sides of my mouth in the direct line where the mask sat all night.
I continued on for 2 weeks and decided to try another mask. I was put in the air fit 10 FF mask. The tingling then increased to every spot the mask touched. I wore it for 3 more weeks.
I have taken a break from my cpap to see if I can heal these nerves in my face. I was having so much leakage that I was over tightening my headgear. Now at night I still wake with some tingling but it followed this pattern. When it started it began around the mouth where the dreamwear sat, then went up where the AirFit 10 sat. Now it seems to have taken a backwards approach and the AirFit outline of tingle is gone and I am back to the dreamwear outline tingle. Even though I have not used the machine in 3 weeks at least once a night I will have that tingle.
Does this telll me it’s all a coincidence or is this trully from the cpap? Anyone else experienced this? All tingle stops as soon as I removed the mask or when not wearing the mask now, once I sit up it leaves.
Is is possible to bruise nerves in your head and face by over tightening headgear?

I used to wear my mask tight and it leaked quite a bit.
Now I wear my mask pretty loose and the leaks are trivial.
The air pressure "seals" the mask to my face.
I also think I have learned to adjust my mask without really waking up.
Hope that helps.
EDIT: I had jaw pain and pain between my upper lip and my nose until I started wearing my mask less than snug.

There is surgery to correct deviated septum.
If DS interferes with cpap use, there is a good chance insurance will cover it.
Definitely NOT a cosmetic procedure.

Yes and you could make it worse if not careful.

Only other thing might be a matter of slight allergy to the mask and in that case look at liners from Padacheek.com (those also help seal minor leaks).

Thank you for catching the tight headgear issue, Julie.
Tight for me reads "pain"--- and I just don't do it.
Others are tougher, and I forget that.

My study was done at home and I was educated about sleep apnea during a 30 minute class with 4 other classmates.
My supplier has repeatedly told me that I have a good deal and no leaks to be wearing it correctly. I feel like I was given a diagnosis and handed a machine and expected to know a whole lot of info. The auto setting was 5-15. When the machine would get to 11, I would wake up and cough. My pulmonologist lowered the pressure to 8 to because my eustation tube was clogged and vertigo became an issue.
So at month one both ears clogged and a slight rash on my face. All the while the leak procentage was the focus.
My apnea events were between 1.3 and 4. Lowering the pressure helped so much. I tried the air fit20 FF with memory foam cushion for a better seal. It was great but 3 weeks in it was leaking and trying my eyes out.
Dreamwear seems to be my answer until this face tingling issue. I plan to try it again tonight with face cleaning round pads attached everywhere the mask touches me to see if it’s a sensitivity to the materials.
I know so many who quit CPAP therapy and I understand why. Not one of my people at the Home health store use a CPAP. Not one of them really understand the adjustment it is. I do understand that it is an adjustment and I have worked hard to comply. However things just keep happening beyond my control.
The sleep is incredible that I get on the machine. But a great nights sleep followed by vertigo( which thankfully has gone away) and ear issues and a rash during the day and now tingling in the face... well that’s a huge trade off. My Dr has no answers and passes everyone off to the NP. I do plan to get a second opinion in 2 weeks to have a fresh set of eyes on the situation. I don’t want to fix one situation and be left with another problem to deal with as well.
Trying hard not to quit.

Yes, I had some tingling with the Dreamwear FFM.

I used Dreamwear nasal for a while, but had mouth leaks and switched to the full face mask. After a while (weeks), I noticed the tingling. The weirdest part was if I fell asleep mid-day in the recliner (no mask), I would also have the same tingling, right when I woke up. My face felt as if I was still wearing the mask.

Unrelated to that, I switched back to Dreamwear nasal and began taping... no more tingling.

This is exactly what I am doing as well. Like you said even during the day it is as if I am wearing the mask.
I met with my Cpap supplier yesterday and she I might be sensitive to it. I am trying the Dreamwear nasal to see if I can use that. I hope it works. I won’t get it till next week.
Thank you all so much for taking the time to post. It means so much to have people understand.
