Hospital bi-level machine

Post by Okie bipap » Wed May 01, 2019 5:23 pm

Last Tuesday (April 23) I had the asthma attack from hell. After five days of high dose steroids and multiple breathing treatments daily, I went back to urgent care and they sent me to the ER on Sunday evening. The stress from the asthma and effects of the medication had put me into AFIB. I stayed in the ER until after 1:00 Monday morning when they finally transported me to the hospital. After finally getting to bed, the respiratory therapist came in around 3:00 to give me another breathing treatment. She asked me if I used a CPAP machine, and I told her I used a bi-level machine. She said I could use their bi-level machine and asked what my setting were, and I gave her my settings. After completing my breathing treatment, she rolled in ventilator and hooked it up to me. I could not get my breathing coordinated with that thing, so I got very little sleep. I don't care what she said, a ventilator does not work the same as my bi-level machine. My wife brought my machine in for me to use the second night and I was able to sleep for longer than two hours the first time in almost a week. If I had even thought I had a chance of being sent to the hospital, I would have taken my machine with me. Lesson learned. To add insult to injury, I picked up a cold some where along the way.

oh my god! i'm sorry to hear that happened to you.

i take it you have a backup machine that could go with you next time? even if you have to take your primary, you've certainly learned a valuable lesson. thanks for sharing it with us!

If I had known they were going to send me to the ER I would have taken it with me. I was expecting another round of steroids, which I have had happen in the past. The ER was only four blocks from the urgent care center, and I really didn't think about them admitting me. I figured they would stop the asthma attack and send me home, not to the cardiac ward.

I will learn from your nasty lesson - I'm glad you came out the other side of it not too badly harmed.

*probably* it was a respironics machine.. a rude awakening if you're used to a resmed.

If the RT bothered they could have worked with you to try and make it comfortable. It's common to use a Respironics V60 in the hospital setting which can use BiPAP modes and they are able to view on the screen itself different data such as the live breath waveforms to know what settings such as rise time and inspiratory time that need to be adjusted.

The above attention is not likely to happen unless you require mechanical ventilation. Always best to bring your own machine and tell them you don't want their "help" in setting up and using it at night to sleep.

Like you, I ended up in the hospital without any warning, so didn't have my machine with me.
Hell, I didn't even have my phone charger!

Used a hospital machine, which worked OK, but had a friend bring in MY hose and mask.
When I went into surgery, they LOST the hose and mask, so had to wait a week after I got out
to get replacements. Didn't seem to hurt me, but I WAS worried, as I'd had a triple bypass,
and didn't want ANY risk to the new plumbing.

I hope that IF I end up in a hospital again, it's with a bit of warning.

I survived the ordeal. I have follow up with cardiologist next week. Doctor said there is a good possibility this was a one time event brought on by the asthma and medication I was on.

PR, yes it was a responics machine. I think it said v60 on the tag. By getting there the time of night I did, they really didn't have much time to work with me.

If you're feeling better now, THAT is what is most important. AND staying OUT of hospitals.
