Question regaring Second Wind pricing

Post by WestWy » Fri Apr 26, 2019 2:44 pm

Hi folks, I am a new ASV user. Last night was my 7th night on a machine. I am currently renting a DSX900 because that was all that was available the day after my study and I did not want to sleep without a machine because my complex apnea symptoms were pretty severe and causing other medical issues. The machine has helped me and my symptoms are starting to diminish. So, that being the case, I am ready to purchase a new ASV machine.

I have done a fair amount of research and I have decided to purchase a ResMed AirCurve 10 ASV. My insurance will not cover any sleep apnea claims - studies or equipment. So I will be paying out of pocket for the supplies in addition to two sleep studies that I already paid for.

Since I will be paying cash, I have been searching for the best price and I have learned that most retailers sell this unit for $3000 - $3500. Second Wind sells the unit new for $2150. The retailers have told me that ResMed sets the price of their machines and they say that the dealer cost is significantly more than the price listed by Second Wind.

You all know the old saying, "If it seems too good to be true...." Now obviously I would love to save significant money and purchase from Second Wind but am hoping that someone can explain to me how they can sell this unit (new) for over $1000 less than most other retailers? I have noticed that Second Wind gets very good reviews but almost all the reviews are regarding used units. It would be great to hear from someone who has purchased a new unit from Second Wind. TIA

Several members of the forum have purchased machines from them and were very happy. From what I have read about them here on the forum, they go above and beyond what is expected in their customer service. All of their machines carry warranties. If my insurance did not cover my machines, I would not hesitate purchasing from them.

I have used them before - would not hesitate to again. They are helpful, sent exactly what I ordered as they had indicated (hours, etc). No issues or concerns.

Second wind doesn't have a signed contract with ResMed. They don't buy directly from ResMed.
When the online cpap stores buy direct from ResMed and pay the wholesale price per the contract they have to sign an agreement to advertise and sell ResMed stuff at whatever ResMed tells them to say. This is why you won't see much of a difference in MSRP among all the online retailers.

Obviously Seconwind buys the majority of the machines as used from wherever.....secondary market.
The new zero hour machines that they sometimes will have...again the secondary market...open box specials or something. We are never told exactly how they get those new zero hour machines.

But they are good people to deal with. If I needed something they had....I would buy from them in a heartbeat.
I don't care where they buy their inventory. I know of all sorts of stories where they bent over backwards to help someone out.
Even overnighted a machine to Australia when the buyer accidentally bought the wrong machine. They sent what he ordered...he just ordered the wrong thing....wasn't their fault but they went the extra mile to get him the machine he needed quickly and didn't even wait until the wrong machine was back in their possession.

Thank you mets123 and especially Pugsy for the detailed explanation to my specific question regarding "new" machines that are sold by Second Wind. Now if I could just get my doc to give me my prescription. It seems like I am pulling teeth out of a rattle snake to get them to give me my prescription.

Tell them you are flying and need a copy of your prescription for the airline.

If you are in the US remind your DR it is your legal right to have a copy of your medical records under HIPPA this would include any prescriptions

I bought a machine from Second Wind....and I didn't need a prescription. They have a very good reputation. Like Pugsy said, we don't know how they get these new units. But they have them and you are better off buying one at a reduced price. Because they are ALL used once you fire them up and put the mask on!

I think it depends on you location and the type of machine (gun) you buy if a prescription is required :D
