Ketosis

Can dietary ketosis for weight loss disturb sleep architecture, cause insomnia and raise AHI?

I don't sleep well and I suspect ketosis is part of it. But not the only reason. And I certainly don't sleep any better when I eat a lot of carbs.

I have been doing Keto for about a month. I have noticed an increase in my AHI since and no matter what I do it does not help. I am also suspecting the fish oil supplement or new multivitamin that I take my also be having an effect on my sleep and AHI. Do you take any supplements?

Sorry you’re going through this too. I take, on a daily basis, the following:

fish oil
quercetin with bromelain
NAC
CoQ10
Proteolytic enzymes
B complex
B12 (hydroxocobalamin sublingual lozenge)
acetyl-l-carnitine
alpha- and R-lipoic acid
vitamin D
iron bisglycinate
calcium citrate
magnesium-l-threonate
magnesium malate
zinc citrate

Wow that is quite a few supplements! I think they may also be affecting your sleep! I know they would affect me.

Yeah, it’s a boatload. I was taking them prior to keto with no apparent effect on AHI, which got into the 1 range. When I went into ketosis I developed insomnia and my AHI went up.

I've been on a moderate ketogenic diet for some time now. Pretty much on maintenance at this point. Have lost about 4o lbs. and my AHI is down some. I never saw it go up, but as I lost weight it went down. Used to be over 1.0 a lot, now I'm seeing it be less than 1.0 most days. Have an occasional 1.3 or 1.4, but usually between about .3 and .7. Hardly ever 0, since I've had a few centrals since I started cpap. I did have a new sleep test after I lost the 40lbs., 6 years into CPAP, at my sleep doctor's suggestion. My AHI on my side went from about 6 to 4. Not as much change on my back, but I hardly ever sleep on my back, anyways.

I've been taking .3mg of melatonin every night for several years. They say that one's natural production of melatonin goes down after 65 years of age, so maybe that's supplying what my body is no longer producing. Seems to help me go back to sleep if I wake up. The usual list of supplements applies, fish oil, multiple vitamin, CoQ10 (along with statins), D3, and a potassium/magnesium supplement. My only complaint is calf cramps that can actually wake me up, which is why I take the potassium/magnesium supplement. Bananas used to take care of that for me, but haven't been eating bananas for quite a while. I'd like to ease the calf cramps, but haven't found the magic dietary combination for that yet.

So I guess that this all varies with the individual, as with nearly everything *smile*.

My AHI is always around 0.2, so that's not an issue.

I take fish oil, magnesium citrate, CoQ10, and a combo D3/K2.

The link referred to the adjustment period, but longer term benefits. There is an individual crossover time, between burning glucose and switching to fat as fuel. 2-6 weeks seems the norm.
