Hey everyone,
I have an hdm z1 auto I use for travel and camping. I use a different "dumb" cpap at home, so I can't pull ay data from it.
My normal setting is 13 and my sleep data rarely shows that it ever goes above that, like maybe 13.5 once a month. I've had the cpap for about 11 years and haven't had any more sleep studies done. Things have always been fine.. I also set my starting pressure at 13.
To see if I could extend the battery life for camping I tried set my starting point much lower, around 8 and just assumed that it would climb up to what is needed as the events happened.
My first data from that night shows that it didn't really go above 8 the whole time, maybe 8.5 or 9 a couple of times. And to be honest, the data shows less events, and looks better than the previous data when I start at 13. I tried to "simulate" an event while watching the readout and it definitely climbed quick in response.
I haven't really lost any weight in the last 10 years, and fairly certain the sleep quality is good. Should I be worried, or does it appear that I don't need it to be as high as I used to?
Thanks in advance.
Confused by sleep data
Re: Confused by sleep data
I am sorry but what you are asking me to do is make a wild ass guess (WAG) as to what pressure you might actually need....and I won't do that without data backing me up.
I will say that often sleep titration studies in a lab end up with a fixed cpap pressure being advised that is a "worst case scenario" pressure to cover all potential bases.
Pressure needs can vary during the night...sleep position often causes changing pressure needs and REM stage sleep also will cause pressure needs to change. Both supine sleeping and REM stage sleep are well known to cause OSA to worsen and cause a need for in increase in pressure in some people.
Maybe you need 13 when on your back and/or during REM but other times of the night or other sleeping position you only need 8 or 9 cm.
So the titration study results said just use 13 all night long and cover all bases.
A bunch of maybes and ifs....how they might actually impact your individual situation....unknown.... and I don't do WAGs myself unless there is a critical need to do them...and I don't see it being critical here. Sorry.

I may have to RISE but I refuse to SHINE.
Re: Confused by sleep data
No WAG needed, and totally understand what you mean, what you replied with is kind of what I was hoping to learn.
Thanks a heap

Re: Confused by sleep data
Essentially I was trying to determine if it was OK what I was seeing.
I want to keep that starting point low because it practically doubled my battery life.

Re: Confused by sleep data
Don't blame you at all for wanting to prolong the battery life...I would do the same thing if I was in your situation.
I just don't want someone misquoting me which is why I take the line I do with WAGs.
It's hard enough to offer concrete opinions based on documented facts...and I sure don't want someone to mistake a WAG for a fact.
The 13 cm fixed on the no data machine....probably is over kill for a good bit of the night based on what you are seeing with the auto machine.....but I can't prove it and they are totally different brands of machines with totally different algorithms.
It hurts nothing to use more pressure all night than you might actually need though....unless the more pressure causes problems like aerophagia or poor sleep or something. Lots of people use more pressure than they might technically need just because they feel better...hurts nothing at all as long as they are happy, sleeping well and feeling good.
