I was looking foreward to my new head gear but it sucks!
Last week I got a regular call from my supplier asking if I needed anything. I remembered seeing an email for a new nasal mask where the hose was attached at the top. Looked like a good idea so I asked for one. I didn't know the model number, but now I think it was the Resmed AirFit N30i. I got an email saying that my Respironics Dreamwear was in the mail. OK, my fault, I should have looked it up first. Post mistake looked them both up and they looked practically the same so I thought OK, it should work. It arrived yesterday and what a disappointment! The new Dreamwear mask was very loud, leaky and I hated the lump on the top of my head!
After an hour I reattached my ResMed Swift FX. It was practically dead silent, didn't leak, and the nose hose wasn't such an annoyance after all. I think I'm gong to leave well enough alone and not even try the AirFit N30i. I think I'd still feel the lump on top, and being a similar design it's probably not quite either.

The lump on top keeps the air away from your eyes and makes things easier for side sleepers who switch sides. That said, the best mask is whatever works well for you.

Used a P10 for a long time. Recently got the N30I and love it. It's really important to have someone familiar with the mask configure it. The sizing is totally different that with other masks

I am a side sleeper who switches sides. I guess my hose is long enough to not cause problems. Also no problem with air blowing on my eyes. You're right about whatever works for you.seattlepap wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 9:20 amThe lump on top keeps the air away from your eyes and makes things easier for side sleepers who switch sides. Your hands by the side of your face like you're a baby sleeping. That creates a nice pocket between your nose and your eyes. When your sleep on your side, the diffuser or a loose fit on a pillow can easily route that air up towards your eyes. If your eyelids are a little open that dry the hell out of the cornea. Then you hit REM, dry cornea and a tear is caused. You end up in agony for a few days with tearing, light sensitivity, etc.
Re: I was looking foreward to my new head gear but it sucks!
That's a heck of a lot of things needed for that to be an issue, and o don't see what difference having the hose connection on top would matter.seattlepap wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 3:04 pmYour hands by the side of your face like you're a baby sleeping. Well, we're not talking about things that are applicable to everyone now are we? I'm not sure if you're trolling here or serious.palerider wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 3:11 pmThat's a heck of a lot of things needed for that to be an issue, and o don't see what difference having the hose connection on top would matter.seattlepap wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 3:04 pmYour hands by the side of your face like you're a baby sleeping. I'm sure he was just making that up, right bro?

Again, what does this have to do with a hose connection on the top of the head?seattlepap wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2019 11:46 amWell, we're not talking about things that are applicable to everyone now are we? Which still begs the question, "How?"seattlepap wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 3:04 pmYour hands by the side of your face like you're a baby sleeping. The vent at the top of the head would not prevent your highly speculative (to the point of being absurd) because there is still a vent in the cradle and the potential for a leak at the point of contact.
It might reduce the volume of air, according to your slumbering baby air pathway theory, but it certainly would not have stopped it.
I'm also having trouble seeing how "hitting REM" has any relevance either.

PR it should be obvious. With the diffuser on top of your head it's much more difficult to direct the air to your eyes, and even if you do it would flow over the lids and not cause a problem. If coming from below the air would force your eyelids open and obviously cause the damage suggested.
Of all people you should understand coming from below.

There are two diffusers, one on top and one below. As well as the potential for a leak from below. A top diffuser does't stop the potential for an air stream from below.

The main vent is right at the front, like on pretty much every other mask, the one at the top is a 'just in case the front one gets blocked" backup, not primary.
Also, as far as I know, there's no diffuser on the dreamwear, just a couple fairly noisy holes.
Regardless, leaks from the dreamwear can get to the eyes, just like with any other mask.
Thanks for the attempt at the snarky shot.
