I can't remember where I read it, I think the Star and Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis, but there was some study about scents decreasing appatite.

I do think essential oils count as an oil, they do not easily disperse in water for instance, and they are often diluted in carrier oils which most certainly are oils. Which is not to say that the system isn't safe, just my two cents.

Personally I worry about plastic exposure, there are clearly a lot of volatile compounds in all the cpap plastic, I know cause after a few months it still smells like plastic. If I can smell it, than molecules of it are certainly going down my lungs. Blech.

I find the clear(peppermint) is not overpowering at all and with the orange spice I just use less than what the directions call for and its great. I just wish you could get in to apply the essential oils without having to unscrew the chambers. would make it a whole lot easier for lazy people like me. otherwise its a great product.
Thanks Ian (I think that's you!). Unfortunately the design of the chamber is not likely to change any time soon. Achieving a consistent seal is very important and there just aren't that many design options and having hashed through this with a very good design engineer, this is the best way to do it. Most people do not find the opening and closing to be a problem.

yahoo!!! I slept 10 hours straight last night. I turned over once and made one trip to the potty. I was using my essential oils. I have not slept like that in years. I find I really look forward to putting on my mask and going to bed since i started using pur-sleep. I work 3-11 at a local hospital and my evenings are very stressful, I find I have been more relaxed and have a better attitude since I am sleeping better. thanks sleep guy! I'm looking forward to many more good nights of sleep. pat

Essential oils are oils in the sense that they are hydrophobic (not water soluble). However, essential oils do not contain any fatty acids. My earlier comments went to the issue of lipid pnemonia, which is not related to essential oils. "Carrier oils" that some people use to dilute essential oils prior to direct application to the skin most certainly contain fatty acids but none of the Pur-Sleep products include carrier oils.

Hello everyone,
I was happy to find this forum. I am 37 and newly diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. I am not all that familiar with the numbers but I was having approximately 80 episodes per hour and my oxygen was at 60. The only reason it was discovered was because I went in for a surgery and the nurses could not wake me up one night. They did further tests and found a large hole in my heart and the sleep study showed the apnea. I just received my machine and have been trying faithfully to get used to it. I have yet to be able to fall asleep with it on. The scent from the mask is so strong and unpleasant, I dread putting it on. I came to the internet desperately seeking a solution to this problem. I've tried washing the mask over and over again. I was so happy to find the Pur-Sleep website and ordered the deluxe starter kit. It can't arrive fast enough for me. I am hoping this will be the answer. I didn't realize what a life change this is going to be and it has left me rather depressed. Any advice anyone has would certainly be appreciated. I have two little girls who seem frightened by the mask and I am hoping they will get used to it. Most of all, I am hoping I will find a way to be compliant and tolerate the therapy. Thanks in advance for any advice.

You'll be glad you did!!!!! I couldn't be happier with the system myself. Frankly, it's the only pleasant thing about this therapy as far as I'm concerned. I'm anxious to try more scents.

I think you will be thrilled with the Pur-Sleep product. Just remember to start with only one or two drops, more can be added, but that is enough to take away any mask scent.

As for being a little depressed, I think finally being able to get a good night's sleep will help that a lot. This therapy can be a bummer sometimes, but the benefits far outweigh the costs.

I also have two little girls. As with most things, I think they will take their cue from you. If you treat this a big deal, embarrassing, you don't like it, etc, that is how they will view it. If you treat it as no big deal, and even try to find some humor in it, they will be very comfortable with it. I made sure my girls saw it the first night and we talked. They understand it helps daddy breathe at night and it is no big deal to them. They even fight over who gets to go wake up daddy on Sat morning so they can be the one to turn off the machine

And, you have found the right place to help with all those little problems that are sure to come along. Welcome to the best forum on the internet!

I'm so glad I found this site. I feel better already knowing there are people out there dealing with the same thing. Thank you Sleepless in LM. I brought the girls in bed with me tonight and showed them how the air blows, etc...they got a big kick out of it. Explained that it will help me have more energy, etc. and they seemed perfectly fine with it. My older daughter is excited to smell the scents I will soon be getting in the mail.

Just a question about equipment, Is the bipap auto M series a good machine and are there any more comfortable masks then the comfort gel? I wasn't given a choice but was grateful insurance paid for the whole thing.

Thanks again for the quick response.

Hi there,

Welcome to cpap talk. This is truly a great resource and source of encouragement. Have a look at the the Collective Wisdom and that will give you a good head start.

Good luck, and just post a question when you get stuck and someone will be able to help you.

I've done some distilling of essential oils myself, just as a hobby, using one of these thingies:

Table top distiller (alcohol, essential oils)

It works, but it is a bit tricky and I still have experimenting to do to get it right.

I've been using PurSleep for a week now and have noticed that my AHI has come down. My wife also loves it, the room having that nice smell and she is sleeping better as a result of it as well. The first two nights I used too much (3 drops, then 2) but 1 drop seems to be fine.

Keep in mind that early owners of:

1. radium-illuminated watches and clocks,
2. lead paint
3. asbestos products,
4. etc.

...all thought they were really nice products too.

See my prior posts about why this too, over the long term, might eventually prove to be a Very Bad Idea:

viewtopic.php?t=17572

On that page, I'm "Guest" with 2 posts. I made a first post, got a rebuttal, then made a rebuttal to that... to which there's been no further reply (perhaps because my argument was effective?)

Check it out. If you want to try the product, go right ahead, but please read my reasoning first. Fully informed is a good thing!

Thanks for the post ?Guest? I appreciate it. I read your previous posts.

I certainly believe in getting all the information about any product, and have been diligent in searching this out as well. I am seeing a respiratory specialist next week and will certainly ask him for his thoughts.

I must say I have been impressed with Bret's fair mindedness. He advised me by PM not to persevere with his product if it wasn't suiting me, so his motive is not just to make a buck, but as a fellow papper is genuinely concerned. He could have advised me to "stick it out, you'll get used to it."

And I hope he makes a motza out of it, the product seems good and fairly priced.
