nature.com:Sleep increases chromosome dynamics

Post by zonker » Mon Mar 11, 2019 7:15 pm

Sleep increases chromosome dynamics to enable reduction of accumulating DNA damage in single neurons-

from the article-

"Sleep is essential to all animals with a nervous system. Nevertheless, the core cellular function of sleep is unknown, and there is no conserved molecular marker to define sleep across phylogeny. Time-lapse imaging of chromosomal markers in single cells of live zebrafish revealed that sleep increases chromosome dynamics in individual neurons but not in two other cell types. Manipulation of sleep, chromosome dynamics, neuronal activity, and DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) showed that chromosome dynamics are low and the number of DSBs accumulates during wakefulness."

people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

I am sure my zebra fish would be fascinated.

But is accumulation of DNA damage to single neurons meaningful? Does it matter? How MUCH accumulation... and does it translate to people or only fish?

Beauty sleep is in the mind of the beholder.

Thanks for sharing! Great explanation of why preserving sufficient restful sleep is so very important for our brain. This might very well turn out to be the pivotal initiation of neurodegenerative conditions.

Good sleep good.
Bad sleep bad.
Good sleep good for body.
Bad sleep bad for body.

This has been known since before mankind climbed down from the trees.
Good Grief.

True.
I am just having a little fun. My therapy is going very well since I got on this forum and absorbed a small fraction of its knowledge and then applied it. I am feeling good and frisky. Just trying to have a small chuckle while whiling away the hours in my golden years. Also the weather sucks here and I am stuck indoors and bored. Everybody be happy. JPB

Venting is not only allowed but encouraged here. I appreciated your post. My comment was only meant as complementary group harmony, not as dissonance.

Sleep improves group dynamics, too! :D
