For your information, I was never banned from Apnea Board. I'm still an active member there! In fact I was just telling one of the members who pm'd earlier who was confirming what a jerk palerider is that I go there periodically.
SuperSleeper was offended because I made a thread here wherein I said CPAPTalk was a superior forum to ApneaBoard, and the poor little guy just took offense at that!!!![]()
Btw, the beginning quote in my reply above was your direct reply to me in this thread after I requested that people be more civil towards each other (my post was the 5th reply and yours of course followed mine). You said, "No way! I love [fighting on] this site. I hope it stays just the way it is!" - - Well, you got your wish! - - I sure hope nothing is "offending your sensibilities"!!!![]()

Re: OT: constant cyber-harassment
Accusing someone of mental illness in the thread about cyber harassment kind of proves some of what Jedi Mark was talking about in the OP. I don't know what is true or false in the complaints about him or his about others that took place off-line, but I do know that he is correct about this forum being permissive of bullying. And the leader in chief of that bullying is Palerider, who, because he can also be useful, gets not only a free pass but also high fives for his bullying from his posse of enablers. He is such a bully that he even attacks multiple people in his sig, automatically adding his attack to his thousands of posts archived here. He tells others to put his foes on ignore even as he admits in this very thread that he doesn't follow his own exhortation.
For those who suggest that one can only have "good advice" (here) or "good feelings" (at the other forum) what they are suggesting is that bullies must be tolerated. It's the destructive dynamic that lets CEOs get away with sexual harassment, and coaches get away with strangling players, all based on the excuse that the "higher ups" are just too important to restrain and their bad behavior must be tolerated if the organization wants their expertise.
As much as PR is a draw here in spite of his harassment, he is also a repellent. We've all seen him drive people out of the forum (with cheers and high fives from the PR Posse).

jnk's post was good. I also thought nikkwong's post was on point when they cited some of the HackerNews forum rules as an exemplar for a functional and informative forum: ""Be civil. Don't say things you wouldn't say face-to-face. Don't be snarky. Comments should get more civil and substantive, not less, as a topic gets more divisive." And how sorting crap threads from informative threads here can be a pain. PR will say it's his foes who ruin threads, and imply his hostility is heroism to clean up the forum, but he is a major part of the noise and the problem.KnightSleeper wrote: ↑Sun Mar 31, 2019 1:17 pmVery well said Stom!!! - - You make more sense than many of the people here, and yet palerider has you on his "enemy list"?!?!?! A big issue here is that this forum is social. Many people bond with the ingroup by ganging up and being mean to people who are "outsiders". So, the idea of having rules enforcing civility threatens the existing social hierarchy here that is based in part on harassing outgroup members.
On a different note, I think SuperSleeper made a mistake if he did, in fact, nuke jedimark's account and deny him a reply to the accusations leveled against him. Such accusations could be actionable defamation if proved to be false. But it's harder to win a libel suit if a reply was allowed. So it's possible SuperSleeper may want to review his decision with a lawyer.

How much confidence do these people have, that one day you don't share what they said to you privately and out them?KnightSleeper wrote: ↑Sat Mar 30, 2019 3:07 pm
Yes, of course it's "clear where we all stand!!!" Btw, I've received pm's from members who have said such things as:
"You are the first person to say what you said straight out. Others have said it privately but no one has had the nerve to say it straight out in a thread...
Thank you again for saying what many here think, but are afraid to come out and say!"
So, yes Mr. Tough Guy, we know where we all stand!!!
You are going to tell me how to be "proper" on our threads here!?!?!The guy who writes in a "general, open thread" about pulling sex toys out of the top drawer under the tee shirts, and yet in the same breath admonishes someone else to exercise "restraint". Pleassseee Dog Slobber, you're the "last guy" I need advice from on how to "act properly on a public forum"!!!
![]()
And the person I quoted "anonymously" was very glad that I shared their thoughts because they know collectively, there are many, many people on this forum who feel the same way. Unfortunately, a good many of them can't/don't stand up to bullies.
And the people who have pm'd me are nice, decent people who are like most people on this forum. No one is exchanging sordid ideas and plans. - - And believe me, they're definitely not talking about sex toys in their bedrooms... they're just not that stupid to bring up something like that here on a sleep apnea forum!
I didn't admonish you, nor advise you. I was clear in stating, it's something I would not do. I don't believe in name calling, adhominem or admonishing other's behaviour, when it's not my place. My communication has been nothing but civil.
And I have no problem with humour regarding sex-toys, especially on a forum where the demographics is well above the age of consent. And if it's not your style of humour, nor something you would do, that's fine.
I don't see the relavence of others being glad you anonymously shared parts of private conversations. I thought I was pretty clear, should one say something to me in a private communication, I don't believe in "outing" them, to try to make them look bad.

You seem to be suggesting that bullying should be allowed because opposing it with calm, rational discourse is uncivil? Is opposing bullying more or less uncivil than the bullying itself?
I oppose the idea that bullying must be tolerated in deference to some sort of toddler-based code of omertà.

Re: OT: constant cyber-harassment
I hate Bullying, the word! It reminds me if grade school, and middle school. After that you need to find a different word ,and solution to it. What ever it takes, bullies are such because they can get away with it. Inside every bully is a poor little coward, nothing cures a bully like a good beat down, words don't work. A Bully needs to feel pain, before he can realize the fruits of his efforts, until that he thinks he win. Words won't hurt him.
Liberals think everything they don't like is bullying, it's not, it's real life, in the real world. The world doesn't have to agree with your thinking or mine, because of that, everything isn't bullying. I was bullied in school, I learn to deal with it in H.S., and was never bullied again, but it does bother me that the tern is used for someone stepping on your flowers.

Hey, that's my line!
Yep.
In fact I immediately stopped following this thread at all.
At least it ain't as bad as Twitter:
"If you've spent any time on social media, you know that it's the opposite of a civil space. Regular conversations often turn into public, insult-laden brawls, filled with low-blows and vile threats. . . It rarely ends well. The conversation almost always turns awful. . . . Larry says he's not proud of his online behavior. . . . But when he goes online, he says, something takes over him. 'I might call it a troll mode. I'm not really trying to make a point anymore. I'm just trying to battle. And I don't like that. I don't feel good about it.' . . . Tyler says this constant fighting takes a toll. 'You find yourself thinking and feeling about the thread even if you are not on your phone. It's to where you're having panic attacks, or you're hyperventilating.' . . . He doesn't always like the way he behaves online. But he has trouble breaking away."--NPR: Is Civility Possible On Social Media?https://www.npr.org/2019/03/31/70803989 ... cial-media?

If you're concerned about people seeing such things, then why would you repost them?KnightSleeper wrote: ↑Sun Mar 31, 2019 3:42 pm
Dog Slobber-
You can talk like you are in a bar with whomever you want; that's your choice! - - I can handle anything, so you're not going to offend me personally. But If you think that some elderly lady who's struggling with her sleep apena wants to hear you talking about measuring dicks and finding sex toys on a public health forum, you are more foolish than I thought!
I personally would never, ever say something in an "Open Forum Thread" if I thought "even just one person" might be offended! - - But you are cut from a different cloth. And that's fine! - But whatever you do, "Don't tell me how to behave in a public forum!!!" You are barking up the wrong tree Mr. Dog Slobber!!!
Btw, I not only re-read your post as you suggested, but for the benefit of those who might be interested in seeing what you consider "civil communication" in an "Open Forum Thread", I'm posting the two posts that I referenced above. (Of course, I'm posting them here in this OT thread, NOT an open forum thread as you did.)
In your second comment, you say you hope Zonker could "exercise some restraint". REALLY!?!?!?![]()
How about, out of "courtesy for everyone in the Open Forum" you exercise some restraint!?!?!? - - Or is that asking a little too much from you???
Slobbering Dog References Sex Toys & Big Objects.JPG
Slobbering Dog Hoping that Zonker Can Excercise Some Restraint!!!.JPG
And my words about Zonker "showing restraint" was pure parody. I said them knowing full well that my asking him to show restraint, when I had just shown little. I believe he and most others understood the parody.
I fully admit that parody is sometimes not obvious.
Can I also suggest that you refrain from the adhominem.
There have been plenty of posts suggesting that the conversations should be kept civil. My post addressed the outing of others private communications.
You didn't address that, or defend it. Instead your response attacked me, not my message, and something in a different topic, that happened some time ago. Instead of addressing the sharing of private communications, you responded by suggesting, "but you've done worse."
If you don't want to address it, that's fine. But going through my history and attacking me, has no place in a topic about bullying.

Re: OT: constant cyber-harassment
I was going to refrain from posting anymore on this thread but I would like to adress several points that have been brought up by different people.
#1. Everything I say here I would say to your face. I feel that many of us here would do the same.
#2. I am a grey haired old lady. I am not offended by talk of sex toys in a drawer or anything else. I am an adult. I have grown kids. I know how the process works. Just because I am old does not mean I can't enjoy a good joke.
It seems to me the people here who are complaining about bullying are not us old folks.
#3 Pugsy has already said the rules are not going to change so why are we still arguing ? If someones hoo hoo's are hurt well grow up. I personaly don't give a rats behind if I've offended kitten sensibilities. Life is not pretty. And I think those of us in the grey haired crowd know that. We have not gotten to be grey haired by curling into a ball and hiding in our safe spaces.
