Why Does AHI Vary

Post by jwoceanside » Sat Jan 12, 2019 8:10 am

I was wondering why my Events per Hour are so up and down. Here's the last 7 nights

0.7
5
8
6
11
2
5

Is there a cut-off or normal AHI? Any body maintenance to control your AHI? I sleep on the average of 5 hours per night. If you maintain a favorable AHI does your other numbers matter, such as Mask Seal, which is usually 10/20. I use a Nasal mask

Thanks

They vary because we simply don't sleep the same each night and lots of stuff can impact all aspects of therapy.

Spend much time on your back and not on your side...and your OSA is worse when on your back...it's going to likely show up with an increase in AHI.

If your OSA is worse in REM (mine is) then the more REM you get then the AHI might increase.

Maybe your OSA is combo worse...worse in REM and when on your back.

Spending much time awake with mask and machine on....that can cause false positive flagging....again variations in the AHI.
High AHI because of SWJ false positives.

Sub optimal settings...can cause variations in AHI.

Numbers don't mean squat without knowing about how the sleep quality is and how a person feels or how long they slept...be it 0.0 AHI or 10.0 AHI...they don't mean a thing all by themselves.

Thanks Pugsy

Generally, my Sleep quality is the same before and after CPAP. I sleep 4-5 hours. Some times I stay in bed--awake--hoping to fall back to sleep. 4 weeks in. Still taking daytime naps. More than usual. Lack of energy 24/7

My Pulmonary doctor told me to sleep on my stomach. Head towards edge of pillow
My Gastroentologist on my left side
My Orthopedic Neck and Hip doctor on my back

However, sleeping on my back leads to a sore lower back

My Ramp Time and Climate Time is set at Auto. Tube temp at 60o
Air Pressure goes from 8--18.
Preparing for bed I make sure my mask is properly fit.
Pressure at 8
At times, air flow or pressure reaches high end, late at night.

Have several MD appointments to see if Fatigue may arise from other conditions. Was sure it was Sleep Apnea. And maybe it is, but need more time. After 2 months of rehab I'm still not 100 % from hip replacement

4 to 5 hours of sleep....not nearly enough to expect much change in energy levels even if it is a solid 4 to 5 hours and the AHI was 0.0 and we had zero other issues that were messing with our sleep quality and how we might feel.

You probably need to take a crash course in figuring out if some of those flagged events you are seeing that are elevating your AHI are real or not.

If you aren't asleep....they don't count. Take the time to learn to get an idea whether you were asleep or not when those worrisome events got flagged.
