Anyone else addicted to CPAP?

Post by Sleepygal1 » Fri Jan 04, 2019 10:29 am

Kinda funny but I'm driving my family crazy with all my CPAP talk. I basically started measuring my life in pre and post-CPAP days. For me its night and day when I use it versus when I don't, and they will have to pry the machine from my cold dead hands.

The sleep doctor and family think I'm crazy but I've gone to heroic lengths to use the machine like taping things to my face and putting socks on my hands, neck braces, etc but if its the difference between full power to my brain and living in what I can only describe as a daily heavy alcohol hangover, I'll do whatever it takes.

Its also become somewhat of a hobby with various peripherals I've collected like a bunch of types of masks, nasal gels, etc. It looks like i could start my own CPAP store at this point!

I'm not allowed to talk about it anymore and get an eye roll if i bring it up at dinner...

My name is Jeff.

I am addicted to CPAP.

I've had to dial it back a notch, myself.

You can lead a hose to user, but you can't make him PAP.

Welcome to the party.
Good habits are not addiction.
If your enthusiasm is being mistaken for zealotry,
then you are talking to the wrong people.
We understand.

no. i'm just not a proselytize type of person. the zealotry of others gets on my nerves, so i try not to burden others unduly with my enthusiasms.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

*lol* I was going to say "nobody is 'addicted' to CPAP any more than some people are 'addicted' to eyeglasses". Now, some people really LIKE their new glasses, and how much better that they can see with them... but I wouldn't call that an 'addiction'.

And Sleepygal1, as far as anybody giving you eyerolls, tell 'em to shove it, you're loving being able to live again, and if they don't like it, they should examine why they aren't happy for you.

I guess I am bordering on zealotry.

Now that I know what impact it had on me, and I've read symptom lists of UARS and other chronic disorders that could directly be caused by apnea, I'll suggest people get sleep studies and get on CPAP. Now of course I see sleep problems everywhere. :-)

I'm thinking Resmed and Phillips should start paying me as an "evangelist".

Also funny story that I've had with two different wives of ex-snoring hubbies:

them: Oh hubby doesn't need CPAP, he had adenoid/throat surgery so he's all cured. He no longer snores at all.
me: Well, just because he's no longer snoring, it doesn't mean he's not having events. Has he had a sleep study since the surgery to verify that he's cured?
them: Hmm.. good point. Well, he no longer snores so that's good enough for me.

yes, and when he's dead, he'll definitely not snore anymore!

Not me.... I'm just addicted to sleep every night  Been a hose-head for almost 9 years and am happy to tell anyone that needs to hear it.

Cheers

And you're probably not wrong. Sleep apnea is (I think I read) one of the most under-diagnosed, and mis-diagnosed conditions out there.

It is difficult to overstate PR's point.

And that, perhaps, is what makes the prevalence of the problem worthy of some alarmist "evangelism," such as that attempted by the AASM and Frost and Sullivan back in 2016:
Imagine a news report of a government study showing that a life-threatening cancer present in 12% of adults goes untreated 80% of the time. Patient advocacy and public health organizations would have major concerns and launch widespread initiatives to address this massive diagnosis and treatment gap. Presently, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a serious and life-threatening sleep illness, fits this profile. The underdiagnosis and under-treatment of OSA is due to lack of education, underappreciation of the seriousness of the condition, and a healthcare system hyper-focused on acute illness; this is draining the US healthcare system of billions of dollars, while millions of patients suffer the chronic effects of this sleep disorder. . . . Raising awareness and educating the general public is critical as there is a misconception that snoring or sleepiness is normal. -- https://aasm.org/resources/pdf/sleep-ap ... crisis.pdf
That link is provided just in case you need some printed literature to leave with your friends and neighbors.

Would you like to talk about that more, to explore why, since we have a few minutes left in this session?
