Vicks in Water chamber
Vicks in Water chamber
I have a bad head cold and vicks helps keep my sinuses open.
Would it hurt to put a glob of vicks in my water chamber of an Aissense 10.

Re: Vicks in Water chamber
You don't want to put anything in the water chamber but water. Put the vicks on a small tray near the air intake or get some eucalyptus essential oil and use a small amount of that on a cotton ball located near the air intake.

Re: Vicks in Water chamber
I understand the thought to put it in the heated tank, because moms used to rub it on kiddies'
chests, and body heat would warm the Vicks, producing a vapor, which was then inhaled.
The problem there would be TOO MUCH vapor all at once, and a tank cleaning nightmare.
When the vapor comes from outside the tank, it can be moved to a comfortable distance.

Please do not add anything to the water in the humidifier. Oil droplets get mixed into the air (so far so good) and then get pressed into your lungs at high pressure (not good!).
I tried it once before knowing better and was coughing my lungs out for weeks.
Please don't do this.

I wouldn't. You could leave some residue in the machine.

Re: Vicks in Water chamber
Once, I brought my S9 for a small presentation to a group at an Einstein's Bagels in Atlanta. (Muse-Inc. may remember.
) For the next couple evenings, my mask and machine smelled like burnt bagels. I didn't even have a bagel and my machine was only turned on for a minute to show the (back then) fancy led panel. The lesson to be learned is that your cpap is likely to concentrate smells. Putting something as harsh as vicks vaporub or any essential oil is probably going to make your cpap tank entirely unusable. Imagine drinking a whole gallon of seltzer and then belching through your nose all night. It's not just annoying. It's an assault on your nasal passages. Worse, if that stuff aerosolizes, it could get into your lungs and cause real damage.
If I remember, there is an old previous post about lung damage from aerosolized essential oils on the forum.
You could try an external diffuser tray outside your cpap machine, but measured actual benefit is currently anecdotal.

Also, try not to get any oils on the silicone parts of your mask. It makes silicone degrade and wear out faster.
LSAT's suggestion of Neilmed nasal rinse or perhaps some other pharmacy-approved pre-sleep regimen is probably your best option.

Have you ever tried Flonase?
A Neti Pot with sterile water and specially prepared salt?
Saline nose spray? I am not sure of the ones with Zinc are a good idea?
Immune system stimulators? Vitamin C. Antioxidants? and so on.

I have a bad cold at the moment and as others have said put some on a small dish next to the air intake. This worked really well for me, I got the benefit of the vapor but it wasnt overpowering.

Most definitely. And I'll use this a lead in to tell about my vapo-rub experience. Not because of a head cold.DreamDiver wrote: ↑Mon Dec 17, 2018 10:37 amThe lesson to be learned is that your cpap is likely to concentrate smells.
Our dog (Cash) sleeps in his crate at the foot of our bed. We learned long ago that we simply can't feed him table scraps. He can make my eyes water with his farts. I don't know what he came across in the backyard, but I woke up one night and it was like he was sitting right on my nose. Concentrated? Highly.

I got up and let him outside, hoping he'd take action to alleviate the situation. Left his crate door open hoping he'd go somewhere else, and tried to go back to sleep. I couldn't. He was still at it. Desperate, I went into the bathroom looking for something (anything) "smelly". I spotted the vicks and immediately thought of my detective books. "Works for Harry Bosch around a decaying body". And dabbed some under my nostrils, just like Harry does.
This actually worked and I was able to get back to sleep and stay asleep the rest of the night. Very surprised to find no residual odor when I went to bed the next night. I put the vicks on the night stand just in case, but whatever was ailing Cash's sensitive digestive system had passed and I didn't need it.
Anyways, there's my vapo-rub experience.

Re: Vicks in Water chamber
@djams: as effective as that sounds, I have a feeling it might not be compatible with nasal pillows.
I would smear a bit of Vicks on a cotton ball, placed in a small dish next to the air intake.
Or a few drops of aromatherapy oil from Pur-Sleep. (CPAP Vapor Clear Sinus Blaster)

Re: Vicks in Water chamber
I'm sure you're right about the nasal pillows. This happened while using my F20 mask, I think the effectiveness would be somewhat reduced even with my F30 due to the nose saddle.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Wed Dec 19, 2018 2:06 pm@djams: as effective as that sounds, I have a feeling it might not be compatible with nasal pillows.

And thanks for the recommendation on the Pur-Sleep. I'd think a product designed for CPAP would be the best choice.
