How to use S9 without humidifier?

Post by MyIdaho » Thu Dec 13, 2018 11:08 am

Hi Folks,

I love my s9 and have used it every night for the last six years! Oh wait, but not last night... I was getting humidifier failure error, please replace. My climateline tubing does not connect to the main blower unit. Did not go well last night with no cpap. Anyways, the local supplier wants to replace the s9 due to being beyond warranty and I would qualify for new one based on Blue Cross Idaho policy. I not sure the supplier, doctor's office, and insurance can get all their i's dotted and t's crossed for me get a machine today...

With that long preamble, what do I need to use my S9 without the humidifier? I'm thinking I just need to replace the hose with another type but I don't know which one... Anyone know which to buy?

Would it be silly to replace the humidifier on my own and use the s9 as my backup? Can I just order a humidifier or do I need to doctor's script to get one?

Can I specify that I want a S9 autoset rather than Air Sense S10? I travel alot for work so smaller size is very handy.

Thanks!

In pinch....reverse the hose so it will fit on the machine and still let you attach a mask. It will work.

Otherwise...need a regular non heated hose.

S9 models have been discontinued...no longer being made and unless someone has one sitting on the shelf somewhere you probably can't request it and get it from your DME.

Now they are out there available but you would have to pay up front and not get insurance involved.
Secondwindcpap.com has some.

Hi Pugsy,

I tried reversing the hose but it did not fit tightly on the blower unit. As you suggested, it looks like the regular slimline hose is needed. I could get one significantly cheaper on line but a night's worth of sleep is easily worth the difference! :)

Thanks,

Rick

Tape the hose to the blower with some sort of tape that is fairly easy to remove. Doesn't have to be perfectly snug tight...just has to be so it won't fall off easily.

Wish you were my next door neighbor....I have 4 brand new generic hoses that you could have one for free.
You don't have to use a slim line hose either...you can use a standard hose just change the hose diameter in the setup menu.

As for cost and is it worth it....
Couple of years ago I went to Vegas to see my daughter...got there on a Friday night...4 th of July weekend.
At 11 PM I realized some dummy had left the long hose at home and it wasn't in the bag.
Nothing could be done about it. Most DME stores were closed for the weekend holiday.
Found a medical supply house that had a hose and were open on Saturday...cheap generic gray crappy hose that you can get online delivered to you for $5.
I paid $30 for it...best $30 I ever spent because I slept with my machine Sat night.

Check pharmacies in your area...some have cpap supplies and not horribly high priced. My little mom and pop pharmacy in the town I live near (population about 5K) has cpap stuff for sale.

Any regular hose will work, and many people have used the heated hose reversed. (be sure and set the hose type manually on the machine).

If you need a hose today, some truck stops have cpap supplies, (including hoses), since many truckers are on cpap.

Any regular ol' CPAP tubing will work. You can get it from a local medical supply store most likely, or same day Amazon shipping if you have that capability.

Apologies Pugsy, of course you were right! In my grogginess, I didn't see to take off the end piece that attaches to the mask. After removal, I have a tight fit on the blower unit so I'm to good to go! You're always timely and helpful Pugsy, you're the best!

Hey PR, appreciate your help! I'm not sure what you mean by set the hose type manually... I seem to have deleted by manual for the s9 or it didn't make the move to the new computer. Can you tell me how? thanks!

Go here and request another copy of the manual.
https://www.apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap- ... tup-manual

You only need to change the hose diameter in the menu if the selection already in there doesn't match the hose you are using and/or you change to a hose with a different diameter.
The heated hose is a slimline hose...reversed or not.
Just confirm the hose diameter in the menu selection. It may default to slimline even without it sensing the heated hose being attached when reversed.

I had the same problem with the regular hose. I used a nylon zip tie to secure it.

I believe it's in the settings menu, you don't even have to get into the clinical menu. hit the double checkmark button and poke around a bit.

Thanks everyone! Worked like charm, slept like a baby for 6 hrs and the Mrs woke me up so I wouldn't sleep too long and disrupt my schedule. Thank you so much, I feel alive again after this awesome sleep. My S9 has always been a miracle box for me.

A few other thoughts/answers:

Q. If you get a new machine, is it crazy to buy a S9 humidifier so you have a complete spare machine?
A. Not at all !! I keep my S9 Vauto as a backup. I should add that lots of used S9 (and the H5i) are at least on my local craigslist.

Q, Can I request a particular machine from a DME?
A. I would insist on it but --- the machine has to be tied to a script for what is essentially that type of unit (i.e., auto, bi-level, etc.). Be aware there are many airsense 10 models (and many aircurve 10 models).
Machine: Aircurve 10 Vauto (Prior S9 VPAP)
Mask: Quattro Air FFM and AirTouch F20 FFM

And now for the rest of the story... :D

Read on Amazon that someone had purchased a new climateline hose for their S9 and received an error message when installed (Humidifier failure, replace Humidifier). The customer replaced the new hose with their old hose and the error went away. I was receiving the same error so I switched to an old backup hose and now my humidifier works perfectly. Wahoo! A very inexpensive fix!

Thanks everyone for their advice and assistance! Most appreciated and allowed me to get some rest!
