Possible sleep apnea?

Post by CPAPSteve » Thu Dec 13, 2018 9:52 am

I lent my brother my spare AS10AS machine to try out last night using a p10 pillow mask. He is for sure not a mouth breather (confirmed by his spouse) and I set the machine up with a start pressure of 5.6 for ramp and a min treatment pressure of 7.

He says he slept with it for nearly 6.5 hours and all he could recall was the unit operating at 11 can of pressure. No I unfortunately don’t have access to his SH data yet but is it a fairly safe assumption that if he started out with pressures of around 7 and ended with pressures around 11 that he probably has sleep apnea? He hasn’t seen his doctor yet to do a sleep study but his spouse say he snores a lot. His snoring last night when on CPAP was non existent (so I was told).

What I am wondering is if his snoring stopped and hisnpressures upon waking were around 11cms of oressure doesn’t that mean that his machine detected events such that it bumped up the pressures accordingly to stent his airway open? I won’t see him for at least two weeks so getting at SH data from now until then would be difficult at best and he is not a tech savvy guy.

Most likely confirms some sort of sleep disordered breathing that the machine wants to increase the pressure in an effort to kill whatever it didn't like.

I did a similar experiment some years back on my sister and her husband.
Her pressure never moved off the minimum of 6 that I set it at....but his went to 10 and stayed there.
Come to find out her poor sleep and fatigue was caused more from her blood pressure medications and once she changed her meds the unwanted symptoms went away.
Now her hubby....different story. Whole family has sleep apnea....and he snores something awful but still blew it off. Wouldn't proceed with any other evaluation or therapy.

So did your brother in law end up sticking with CPAP therapy?

My brother honestly is avoiding seeing the doctor of his issue because similar to my parents behavior there is a stigma around using a CPAP machine. They claim they don’t want to look like a person on a ventilator in a hospital. My response to that is if you don’t use a CPAP to address your issues that you may end up in the hospital on a ventilator against your own will because you had a stroke or heart failure !

Some people just don’t get it....

My brother in law blew it off. Wouldn't do anything about it. Despite his own brother being on the machine and being successful with it.
You can lead a horse to water but you can't force it to drink.
Same thing goes with cpap and OSA.

My own brother has OSA...and I did the screening on him because I witnessed breathing stoppages when he was in the hospital and his O2 alarm was going off like crazy.
His fix for it...take off the pulse oximeter to turn off the alarm...
and the one night on the cpap for screening....I am never going to do that...hate it...I will take a Flexeril to help me sleep.
Dumbass. But I can't force him to do anything he doesn't want to make the effort to do and he's such a non pleasant asshole I won't even try.

Wow that is crazy. My elderly parents both have moderate apnea and they both have high blood pressure and diabetes. Shocker.... and to add insult to injury they say they have no problems yet they fall asleep in random places similar to Grandpa Simpson and my father has even crashed his cars a few times Probably because he wasn’t fully awake.

I learned a long time ago to pick my battles that I might want to wage.
I don't waste my time and energy on battles that I don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of ever winning.
You get where you can recognize those. I present the facts...state the case and move on. I can't save everyone and everything.
Some people just don't want the help and don't want to do the work needed to get help. I can't shove it down their throats and won't even try.

Oh Boy !!!! I have another horror story for you...… My neighbours wife was complaining about his snoring and stopping breathing but would not go and get himself checked out  I lent them my spare machine all set up and ready to go when he finally agreed to allow me to help... (his 4 sons are on the hose and they chimed in to get me to convince him to get tested) . Well he had the machine on for about 2 hours and told his wife "to get that s^#t away from him"...……..sad to say he had a massive heart attack in the middle of the night a few months later and passed away. My other neighbor did agree to get tested after that.... BUT.. decided he would not use a machine because it was afraid of it killing him. HE now has heart problems but still wont use THAT machine because he says he will get the hose all tangled up around his neck and he will strangle to death.  :( :( .

Good for you to try and convince someone to get tested..... BUT you can't help if they won't LISTEN!!!!!

Nan
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Yes I know it is a battle that isn’t worth fighting (my parents). They just came back from Asia in a month long vacation and my mother had the CPAP setup in her room before she left and when they came back the other day I was digging through their office and guess what I found buried under all their junk? The very CPAP machine I worked so hard to find them allxpacked away and put under junk never to be found or seen. I give up. They won’t miss it from their home. My brother at least is willing to try it out and his wife is encouraging him to do so. He has the usual mask leaks and stuff and dry mouth so I just told him to stick with it as it takes time to get used to an alien on your face.

@Nanwilson - that is sad to hear. I personally didn’t want CPAP either back in July but I knew that things like OSA generally get worse with age and I just started a new family not that long ago so I have plenty to look forward to and taking care of my health is of utmost high priority so if I need a CPAP then so be it. It isn’t that bad and I actually don’t mind sleeping with it. I will never understand some people ...
