First night Respironics DreamWear Nasal mask constant air flow

Post by NewCpapper » Mon Dec 03, 2018 6:35 pm

Guys this is my first night and I'm wondering if its normal for air to constantly come out of the hole on Respironics DreamWear Nasal mask. Not when I'm exhaling but constantly.

That's the vent hole. All masks have them...an exit door/opening for the air you exhale which is loaded with carbon dioxide that you need to get rid of.
The DreamWear masks actually have 2 vent holes...one near the nose and one at the top of the mask where the long hose attaches to the frame and the vent hole is in the frame.

You don't want to block vent holes...you don't want to be rebreathing carbon dioxided laden air.

This is normal. The masks are designed to constantly vent air. You can't breathe in all of the air the machine puts out, and it needs to go some where. This also carries the carbon dioxide you breathe out away so you don't rebreathe it.

I feel very reassured by feeling the one vent in front of my face and find that I often keep my hand on the pillow and in the stream as I am falling asleep.

I like ambient noise in the room, though, and I like having fans (and A/C) moving air about ... it reminds me of sleeping on a boat (and other great outside sleeping experiences) so THAT front vent just mixes with my sleep atmosphere.

The TOP VENT, on the other hand, can be CRAZY noisy if it's not positioned right. I've been sleeping with the Dreamwear for a couple of years now and so I know the top vent can be silent if i just fiddle with it. In the beginning though I didn't know this and suffered needlessly many nights while it blew and made a very loud noise.

I'm not exactly sure what I do since my eyes are closed and it's on top of my head, but I just move it in the swivel until it's quiet. Which takes less than a second.

Also, if you wear it too tight it will make noise. I think the rule of thumb on all of these silicone masks is to wear it as loose as possible JUST before leaking. But someone smarter than me will have to confirm if that's the case.

I definitely wear my mask loose. I also prep my skin with alcohol because I have oily skin and am a germaphobe and I think *for me* it helps the seal.
Began XPAP May 2016. Autoset Pressure min. 8 / max 15. Ramp off. ERP set at 2. No humidity. Sleepyhead software installed and being looked at daily, though only beginning to understand the data.
