usually referred to as a "weighted blanket".

sounds awful. i sleep with just a top sheet 365 days a year. i hate feeling constricted in any way

A good point; and a reminder to dispose of these products responsibly.
Keep them OUT of the ocean.
Plastic beads are usually recycled--and can be recycled again.
Some can be used in 3D printers, even.

Just wanted to post a follow up. as I finnaly got my "Weighted Blankets" as in more then 1... and I'm loving it!!!


Earlier in this thread I mentioned how I was going to be getting a blanket from "Sensacalm" in the 30 to 40lb range... Well I've been procrastinating for so long because of the cost and the uncertainty of not knowing what I should do with out the ability to try it out... The 380 to over 400 dollar price tag was also freaking me out a bit, was a serious investment for a blanket.

However, me and my wife had a chance to visit with some friends and one of them happen to have a 15lb weighted blanket... I got to try it and loved it. It got me thinking about what if I got something different or doubled up. Instead of going to sensacalm, I got on Walmart.com and found out that the weighted blankets were on close out... there may still be really good deals there... I purchased 2, 20lb blankets max weight I could find, and had them shipped to my house for free. Total cost was about 120 dollars give or take with tax, as the blankets were 60 dollars each.

They feel really well made and the beads for the added weight are fine glass, not plastic. When I want the feel of a 40lb blanket I pile them both on at once, when I want less weight I only use one of the 20's, or I can drape the thing over my sholders like lamb and walk around the house with the extra weight. Helps after a long stressful day. The other 20 when I'm not using it, I've rolled it up into like a soft log and this I leave on the bed were I can wedge my back into it. That 20lb log along with the 20lb blanket means I toss and turn a whole lot less and usually wind up in the same spot in the morning as when I fell asleep.

They admittedly do get kind of hot after a while. Not that great for summer... but I'm looking forward to using them both in the winter time.

When I'm sleeping on my side - I use the blanket like normal - covering up my feet, no problem. When I'm on my back though... I don't like the extra weight pushing down on my toes so I stick just my feet out of the bottom of the blanket and that has worked really well.

The cost even for nearly the same product is all over the place so do your homework and shop around for the best price before you decide to buy. Best price for weighted blankets in the 20lb range so far was walmart for me. Saw almost the exact same blanket at a CVS for 150 dollars. So make sure you know your getting the best price before you commit - you could be paying way way more then you should.

Best of luck to anyone wanting to try one... and if you think you'd like more weight vs less. Try getting a lighter one and then getting more then one so you have options.. I may even get a 3rd 10lb one for wearing over my shoulders like a weighted vest, when the 20lb is too much.

I guess there was a bit of a fad aspect since they were pushing them to the more mainstream crowd in a fad like way. I mean years ago the only people who knew or cared about weighted blankets were people in the autistic spectrum who were working with specialists to deal with their issues.

I've been working on my stress and other issues as I'm on spectrum as well with weighted items. I have a cargo vest that I'll fill with stuff to the point were it weights anywhere from 8 to 11 pounds... I wear this during the day when I'm at work. It helps that the weighted items are tools that I use for my job. When I get home the vest has to come off... but then later I need more weight again. It's like having restless leg all the time, where you feel like your an over tight guitar string that might snap. The weight just sort of settles me down like a big sigh of relief. With the weighted blanket I haven't been as restless when I'm falling asleep as I used to be.

The blankets that I wanted were on close out but compared to before there was like 15 different kinds of blankets from at least 6 different companies, before that there might have been 1 company making like 4 options. So the fad may be over but I think the blankets are here to stay. Crossing fingers and toes.

My wife and son (who has Asperger's) uses one. They love them.

I tried my wife's and immediately freaked out. I DID NOT enjoy having that weight on me one bit. I normally sleep flung every which way across the bed, legs hanging out of the sheets and off the side, etc. I didn't like the very constricted feeling.

Swaddling. My mother-in-law did it.
It really calmed the babies.
Something about the newborn "monkey" brain/fear of falling?
Most of us outgrow it--some need it longer.
The bullfrog likes a stack of stuff over his lower legs.
I go nuts with anything heavy on my flippers.
