Why don’t adults fall out of bed while sleeping?

Post by ChicagoGranny » Wed Nov 21, 2018 6:51 am

Most people stay safely in bed through the night, presumably because they are not totally unconscious when they are asleep. Certain sensory systems remain in operation even while people are blind and relatively deaf, monitoring the relationship of the body to the environment.
The so-called proprioceptor system relies on nerve endings that sense the position and movements of the muscles, if any. Every little twitch and change of position is transmitted to the brain. The system operates waking or sleeping, without our being aware of it, and is related to the body's ability to stand upright without conscious effort.
The system does not operate perfectly in small children, improving with practice over the years.

My youngest child would always fall out of bed when she was younger. I had to put a rail on her bed to stop this. She is now a teenager and will still occasionally fall out of bed. I hope she outgrows this.

My mother fell out of bed occasionally all her life, occasionally injuring herself.

Hose full of water, you might drown, or be electro-CUTEd when the XPAP is pulled off in the pond. Jim

I couldn't roll out of bed if I wanted to, the waterbed frame presents an effective barrier.

Amusingly, the frog's on a lillypad, but I'm sleeping on water... (warm, cozy water).

Me too. I sleep right against the edge of the bed, often with a foot hanging off, but it takes effort to get out of bed. Not gonna happen by accident.

I love my waterbed.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

A few years ago this did happen to me. I was having a dream where a rabbit
changed into a wolf and started chasing me . So I started running toward the
barn at which point in real life I fell out of bed and hurt my knee ! This raises
the question because I was running ( in the dream ) and hurt my knee would
this count as an exercise injury ?

you are not supposed to be moving in REM, this is to protect you and your partner from injuries...

If you don't mention rabbit, dream or REM, file it as an accident!

I've never fallen out of bed that I can remember, but I have fought with imaginary people while asleep. Presumably because I was fighting someone in a dream. That was a weird wake-up.
