Dangerous to sip water with mask on?

Post by mom0rem » Sat Oct 20, 2018 9:15 am

During a Sleep Study, the technician told me to never drink, even through a straw, while wearing the cpap mask.
The technician said to Always take the mask off to drink.
Does anyone know why?
I'm always thirsty and keep a water bottle by the bed, as so many people have mentioned on this forum.
CPAP does not cure insomnia it only prevents holding my breath (apnea) when (if) I sleep

Does anyone know why it could be dangerours to sip water while the airway pressure is on?
thanks

Dunno, but it is easy and quick to hit the off button and then turn it back on again. I'd think you don't have to take off the mask, you just need to turn off the pressure. But it's not an issue I've heard of before.

Perhaps the positive air pressure would make it easier to accidentally aspirate liquid down the wrong pipe, and force the liquid deeper into your respiratory system, especially since you'll be coughing into pressure if you do aspirate.

I don't know if it's dangerous but I do it all night long. I use the same mask as you do and I have a thermos that you push the button to release the water so I don't even lift my head off the pillow. One bed I sleep in doesn't have a convenient place to put the thermos so when I'm there it just sleeps beside me and doesn't leak ... and also keeps my water cold with an ice cube or two!

I was proud of myself the first time I did it with air blowing up my nose! LOL I think I take a mouthful ... then maybe concentrate just a bit to make sure I'm ready to swallow. However, now it's pretty much a force of habit and kinda unconscious.

I will watch this thread to see if I am doing something dangerous and should stop.
I did choose to stop sleeping with hard lozenges for dry mouth after reading here and switched to the sticky xylomelts, but that made complete sense to me once it was pointed out. The water doesn't make sense?

Though I guess you can choke on water any time you swallow wrong and it's definitely a little tougher swallowing laying down with air blowing up your nose. :P

I roll on my side to drink thru straw in bed, 4 times a night for 13 years, not dead yet, I must be doing it wrong! I have spilled the water 4 times in 13 years, maybe he doesn't want to clean the mess up. Jim

"sleep technicians" spout all sorts of wild and crazy things... many of them with little, if any, basis in reality.

Gotta say though, this is a new one after 9 years.

Too bad you didn't ask "WHY?"

ps: I've had countless sips of drink, usually through a straw, while wearing various masks, with and without pressure.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that pressurized air that is meant to keep your airway open could impair the proper function of the swallowing muscles. Maybe someone with a compromised or unique throat/airway that is super narrow or weak? This of course is dependent on the individual but it could be just a blanket statement to patients to ensure that there is zero chance of you aspirating fluid into your lungs because you’ve been warned.

More likely the inane ramblings of a sleep tech.

Otherwise, surely SOMEONE ELSE would have mentioned this revelation over the years.

I suppose if you drank *wrong* you could get it in your lungs, but we all get better at things we do for a while right?

As long as we're not talking full face mask, I don't see why.

However, it is good practice to sit up (or stand up). I prefer not to remove the mask, as this would disrupt my going back to sleep.
