Fluid retention and chest pain on cpap

Post by ponkle » Sun Feb 11, 2007 6:56 am

Hi
I have been trying to use cpap on and off for quite some time. I have 2 weird problems when using it. The nice side effect of not waking to urinate seems to have a complication that I retain fluid and blow up like a balloon is the first. The second is I wake up with my chest hurting. Has anyone had experience with these problems. My pulmonologist seems to think I'm just crazy. Thanks for the help.

I can not answer your question about fluid retention. I may have an answer for your chest pain. Sleep apnea often causes us to beathe in short, choppy, shallow breaths. With the help of cpap we once again breathe in longer, deeper breaths. Your chest pain may very be that your lungs and chest walls are re-expanding. This is quite common among new cpap users.

As for as water retention, you need to be checked out, it wouldn't be XPAP related but heart trouble needs to be ruled out. Chest pain the first month of treatment happens, parts are being moved past their normal limits, but after a month you should be stronger. jim

Are you sure the bloating is from fluid retention? It could be what's called aerophagia, kind of swallowing air, or air being blown into your system in general, and sometimes lowering your pressure a little (point or two) can help. It may have been set high to accommodate some apneas, but if you have an Apap, maybe the low pressure could be lowered a bit (as the machine should go higher anyway when needed). What is it set at?
