Still, I believe a small minority do gain weight quickly, get diagnosed immediately, lose weight quickly, and then are fine.
How did you go about developing this belief?

Are you thinking of pregnancy and subsequent weight loss?

Studies, for example, of those with very mild OSA from a few extra pounds when it is caught early.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2 ... 083812.htm
The study participants were moderately obese adult patients with mild OSA.
The problem is when such studies are so often wrongly applied to moderate-to-severe with long-standing sleep issues and to those with anatomical, hormonal, or other causes.

There's no indication that the subjects in the study "gain weight quickly, get diagnosed immediately, lose weight quickly, and then are fine." I thought maybe you were thinking of women who develop sleep apnea during pregnancy.

jnk did say that he was a dreamer. Anyway, I tend to agree with him. There must be one person in the universe who falls into the, "gain weight quickly, get diagnosed immediately, lose weight quickly, and then are fine" category.

Some in the mild category can sneak back and forth across the OSA diagnostic line with just a few pounds either way, but only when weight is the primary issue and the breathing problem hasn't yet rewired them.

Do I personally consider that any sort of "cure"? No. Not really. But do studies support that losing weight moves some mild patients out of OSA diagnostic criteria? Yes.

New-onset mild OSA is a completely different beast from classic longstanding moderate-to-severe OSA. Docs tend to get confused about that, which is why they keep giving moderate-to-severe patients the ignorant, ill-advised, life-threatening suggestion to 'just lose a few pounds and see if it goes away.'

And even with the more severe, there ARE anecdotal instances of weight-loss surgery resulting in unicorns:
