Any smartwatches that RECORD heart rate all night?
Any smartwatches that RECORD heart rate all night?
Good day everyone!
I'm always looking for the smart watch technology to catch up and help us with our apnea. There is no shortage of heart rate monitors, but we all want to see our heart rate from the previous nights sleep, to see if the apnea episodes are decreasing.
Has anyone had any experience yet, with a smart watch that records heart rate all night long, with short intervals of readings? eg. every 5 seconds??

Hello,
Maybe not quite what you are after, I have recently bought this to record both oxygen and heart rate, and i can view the results on my phone app https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07 ... UTF8&psc=1
notes:
The battery life is about 9-10 hours when the oximeter is recording, so wouldn't be so useful as an 'all day' watch
It has a 'vibrate' function on the oximeter that you set to a threshold SpO2 %, you can set how big the vibration is, the lowest setting has a 50/50 chance of waking me up or just making me roll about.
I haven't worked out if you can download the results to PC yet, only view on phone app
As well as night time recording, you can view a live dashboard on your phone or on the wrist display
The results look like this. On the phone you can zoom right in as much as you like, and it will display the exact number against each recorded point

I have an Apple Watch and wear it all night to track my heart rate and sleep quality. It does a great job; but it takes readings about every 10 minutes, I believe. I don't believe any watch will track heart rate every 5 seconds. It would drain the battery too quickly.

Amazfit Bip has an option to display/track your heart rate as often as every minute. You will need the Mi app to check the history.

Re: Any smartwatches that RECORD heart rate all night?
Some of the latest wrist worn fitness trackers, including the Garmin Vivosmart 4 and Fibit Charge 3, have continuous heart rate, pulse ox and sleep stage tracking. I haven't played with the Charge 3, but I can say that the Vivosmart 4 doesn't record with sufficient resolution or reliability to be very useful for sleep apnea monitoring.
The Vivosmart 4 pulse ox takes 30 seconds of stillness to get a reading, and the results can vary based on how tight the band is. It claims O2 saturation when I'm sleeping is dipping into the 80s, but it also frequently claims it's 100% - really need a dedicated pulse ox to compare it to, meaning I should just use a real pulse ox monitor instead of the Vivosmart. It also only records pulse ox at night for 4 hours. In contrast, the pulse ox set up for the latest Resmeds records oxygen saturation every second.
The sleepstage tracking in the Vivosmart is based on movement and heart rate variability, but it will tag score you as asleep even when you are awake. It takes a lot of movement for it to consider you awake.
Heart rate monitoring. I don't know how many samples it takes. But you can't zoom in on the graph, so regardless of the sampling frequency, you only get a low resolution graph.
I haven't tried the Apple watch monitoring, but the low battery life makes using it as a sleep tracker awkward if you also want to wear it during the day since you'd normally charge the watch while you sleep. But I'd hope the Apple watch has better graphs than the Garmin.
Attached is some Garmin heart rate tracking showing the resolution, and a lot of "what the heck" when the tracker pegs at 127 BPM.

I wear my Apple Watch all day and night, except for an hour and half or so when it charges while we watch TV at night. After almost 22 hours of wear, it is still normally above 60%. It doesn't take long to charge back to 100%. However, if I do think the device shown above that does the heart rate and oximeter looks like what the op is more interested in; but it isn't a smart watch per se.Stom wrote: ↑Fri Oct 12, 2018 11:00 am

What about the monitors that are in a chest strap? They communicate to your smartphone via Blue Tooth.
I have a grandson who uses one for running and gym work. I know he likes it. He said it is more accurate than wrist-worn models. If you are interested, I can find out what model.

I'm currently wearing the Fitbit Versa. It records heart rate 24/7.

Also, via ANT+. I have a Garmin chest strap that communicates with my Android phone via an ANT+ app. Chest strap sensors need to be coated with water before use however.ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Fri Oct 12, 2018 12:54 pmWhat about the monitors that are in a chest strap? Re: Any smartwatches that RECORD heart rate all night?
This is a misleading statement. When I am putting on the strap, I place one drop of water with my finger tip on each of the two areas where the sensors are. The strap will send signals to the phone all night.
Re: Any smartwatches that RECORD heart rate all night?
No. I doubt you'll find anything short of a medical device that records heart rate every five seconds. That would be a tremendous drain on battery too. IIRC, Fitbits show a five-minute average in general with one-minute readings during activity. Check out the Fitbit site for more info.

Re: Any smartwatches that RECORD heart rate all night?
There are exercise watches which sometimes use the wrist, but often use chest straps, that do: Polar is but one of the brands. The batteries last longer than a smart watch, I know, because I own one, and have run many races using it, as well as other things. Other than not broadcasting too much power, the power-saving trick comes from having a battery in the band as well as one in the watch, combined with only using as much circuitry as needed to do the job, which involves a dedicated device with no fancy display. They're more than accurate enough, and are used a lot by competitive athletes and casual ones alike.twokatmew wrote: ↑Sat Oct 13, 2018 10:02 amNo. I doubt you'll find anything short of a medical device that records heart rate every five seconds. Re: Any smartwatches that RECORD heart rate all night?
While not a watch per se, this is what I use each night:
Bluetooth Enabled Innovo® 50F Plus OLED Wrist Color Pulse Oximeter (https://innovo-medical.com/products/innovo-cms-50f-plus).
It records SPO2 level throughout the full recording period as well as the corollary pulse rate which can be loaded into SleepyHead through either Bluetooth or the included USB cable. While it doesn't seem to synch with critical accuracy, it does allow one to evaluate O2 levels, pulse rates, and CPAP recorded events. Much better than not having anything. Just follow the pattern of use and the process becomes second nature.
Caveat: Can only be downloaded to PC. Will not work with Smart Phones. If you buy the Bluetooth version, your laptop/PC must be capable of Bluetooth transmission.
