floaters in humidifier

Post by Catnapper » Mon Oct 01, 2018 9:33 am

So I have a new Dreamstation machine that I have been using about a month. I always use distilled water in the humidifier, as I have done for 12+ years while using my cpap. For the first time ever, when I go to fill the humidifier before bed, I see tiny white floaters in the humidifier reservoir. I clean and rinse the reservoir, then fill it and the water looks clear. Next day, more floaters. I threw out that bottle of distilled water and started a new one. Same thing happened.

Any ideas about what causes this? The filters have been washed and replaced.

Those tiny little filters don't catch everything. Maybe the fine particulate that makes it's way through is ending up collecting on the surface?

Thanks for the help.
Computer issues have kept me off the internet for a couple days.
To wash the humidifier reservoir, I first emptied it, then rubbed the inside with my finger to see if it felt dirty. No. I used hot tap water to wash it, rubbing my fingers inside the reservoir to clean the surface. I did this several times. No soap. Then I rinsed it several times with tap water, then with distilled water. I did not use any kind of towel, but let it air dry for a short time.

I will put a new filter in it today to see if that helps. It didn't happen every day, just some days.

Thanks.

Use cloths, brushes or a sponge to scrub the interior of your tank.
Your fingers cannot access every crevice, and traces of body tissues/oils can be deposited.
You can use much hotter water with a brush, the hotter the better.
I rinse with distilled water, as my tap water is hard, and leaves scale--even in small amounts.

I have a Dreamstation and the water reservoirs can go in the dishwasher. Can yours? That would get it clean! I only put mine in the dishwasher once, I use regular Dawn dish soap & water.

Joannie, sounds like mold: I live in the South and used to get mold in the summer if I didn't wash (and spray with vinegar & let sit a min or two) the tank at least every other day. If I were you, I'd wash the tank with soap, rinse, fill the tank with vinegar and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Then, rinse very, very well and let air dry.
