Significance of numbers

Post by kteague » Sat Feb 10, 2007 6:24 pm

Looks like you're having lots of PLMs but are sleeping thru them. If you had lots of other unattributable arousals, it would make me wonder if somehow they are related but the correlations wasn't able to be made at the time of this study. If your sleep stages are ok, they're probably not much of an issue for you.

Thanks Kathy.

This was my first study. I haven't seen the second one (with the mask) yet.

So what you guys are saying is that the CPAP is probably helping with the related OSA issues but the PLMD's can still be causing me enough grief to not feel better? I hadn't really associated the ongoing "cramps" in my legs to the PLMD but guess that makes sense.

Guess I will call doc and see if I can get this handled...I didn't want to give up but wasn't sure it mattered....

THANKS

PLMD and Cpap

Post by kteague » Sun Feb 11, 2007 11:25 pm

Having OSA and PLMD can make diagnostics a little more complicated. Movements that are not related to the struggle to breath with apnea events can get worse with cpap treatment. When OSA and PLMD were competing to cause arousals, one or the other could be masked, for lack of a better word. Meaning one won out in waking you up.

Beginning cpap treatment removes the hindrances to the PLMD movements breaking through uninterrupted. Just by virture of a titration study being a foreign experience, it is frequently not representative of how well one will sleep after they have adjusted to the equipment and worked the quirks out.

It is just my opinion, but it stands to reason that when PLMD is in question, there is value to a subsequent study using the cpap. Otherwise, treatment decisions are made (or not made) without the most current relevant diagnostic data possible.

I would be very curious to know if there is any hard data out there to show incidence of PLMD increase (or decrease) when there have been post titration studies. Any of our tech folks out there know where this could be found?

Kathy

I've been on VPAP for about ten days now. I had severe PLMD which woke me frequently during the night. Now I hardly move while sleeping with the VPAP. I still don't feel rested, but I'm hopeful that will come with time. My main problem is that I cannot fall asleep even though I'm exhausted, but it's always been that way and has nothing to do with the mask. The mask doesn't really bother me.
