why would you guys suggest the higher ipap of like say 20.

is it just to let the algorithm keep jacking me up if I have events?

I set it for ipap 20, epap min 4, and ps4. I just laid in bed and sat with it on for like 30 minutes just to experience it. after the 20 minute ramp, it was going up to 13 with the exhale dropping down to 9, why does it keep increasing? while i was laying there it felt like a lot of pressure. is it just going to increase up to 20? when does it stop?
Because, the machine only raises pressure if you're having breathing events. If you set a low max pressure, then the machine can't raise pressure to normalize your breathing... and you end up having worse sleep.

Some people are deathly afraid of pressure, so they keep nudging it up a little bit at a time, and as a result, keep having bad sleep till they finally get where they need to be.

If you need pressure in the ... say, 15 range, you'll find out in one night, not in a couple weeks.

Also, awake breathing is very irregular, and confuses the machine, because it's not programmed to deal with awake breathing, so you shouldn't put much stock in what it does while you're awake.

But, really, an epap of 4 is too low for most people, and many don't feel comfortable.
yeah...EPAP of 4 is low and often not comfortable when that is all a person is getting but when you add in PS of 3...it gets real comfortable real fast.

To cpapbro....I totally agree with PR when he says this

The machine will do all sorts of weird stuff with the pressure while you are awake because your awake breathing is so irregular.
Remember it can't tell if you are asleep or not. All it can measure is air flow and that's all it responds to...air flow.
When using a machine for the first time while awake you are going to likely get all sorts of event flags that aren't real events and the machine is likely going to go all over the place because you aren't breathing like you breathe when you are asleep.

Relax...let the machine do its job. Once you go to sleep it will settle down into a more accurate routine and response to things.

To be fair...the reason I suggested 4 EPAP was because originally the question was to how best to obtain the RX that was stated which was for an apap...7 cm with EPR at 3....so that's what I did.... I matched the original RX.
Would the original RX have been uncomfortable...don't know that but I do know that 7 inhale and 4 exhale can be quite comfortable for a lot of people.

Now a setting of 4 with no EPR and no PS...most likely wouldn't be comfortable but there are people who think that 4 cm is a horribly high pressure to have to use.

Well, you know how much faith I have in "original" Rx's :D I matched it too... I just said it was dumb, I wasn't saying YOU were dumb... I'm too scared of you to do that ;)
