Does anyone use a special bed pillow?
OK....so I was taught there ARE no stupid questions, so here I go....
Do any of you use a special pillow that accommodates your CPAP mask in some way? I've seen a few online but am skeptical.
Unfortunately, just as I'm getting used to wearing the mask, I have been waking with a painful neck and I KNOW I have been trying to hold my head on my pillow in a different way in an attempt to make it more comfortable. I am a side sleeper, nose breather.
I'd appreciate your suggestions...

On Amazon enter, "cpap pillows for side sleepers full mask." It should bring you to this item. It works very well for me. Many options for thickness and mask positioning.

as the morning progresses and sleep is rubbed from their eyes, many people will tell you about their particular cpap pillows, of which their are many.
i don't use a special pillow though i did try a flatter pillow. it really didn't do anything for me. i've just trained myself to hang my big bazoo over the edge of the pillow and that works for me.

Re: Does anyone use a special bed pillow?
I use a buckwheat hull pillow. Originally purchased to help train me to side sleep by placing behind my back. Was too small for that purpose, but I found that I really like it as a pillow. One of the selling points is that it keeps your neck and spine in "perfect alignment". I don't know about the perfect part, but it is working wonders for my neck. Way easier to rotate my head, and when I get up in the morning, the crackling, grinding sounds are nearly non-existent. They come back as the day progresses.
If a soft cushy pillow is a must-have this isn't going to work for you. It's quite firm. There's also millet hull which is softer, and also claims to be good for the neck/spine.
Mine has both. I've been sleeping on the buckwheat side for a couple of months I believe. Think I'll flip it over tonight and see how millet hull works out .

How are you positioning your head?clenchingtobreathe wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 10:16 amI KNOW I have been trying to hold my head on my pillow in a different way
Just lie like you did before you started CPAP, except your head should be at the edge of the pillow allowing the mask to stick out over the edge.
If you get used to a specialized pillow, you've got one more thing to carry when you travel.

Re: Does anyone use a special bed pillow?
As djams stated, a lot of folks use a buckwheat pillow. I tried it for a couple of months, and I felt like Fred Flintstone sleeping on a rock. I use the CPAP memory foam pillow that has cut outs on the side. It has a "ledge" that supports my neck.
Pillows are similar to masks. They are very personal and what I like, you may hate.

I own enough random pillows to start a specialty shop! I have been trying to sort of hang my smaller bazoo over the edge too which basically means I'm sleeping on the pillowcase!

Re: Does anyone use a special bed pillow?
If I try to sleep like my old self, I can't seem to find a comfort zone anymore....so I am trying to sleep near the edge...which seems to be a problem for my neck. One more speed bump to overcome, I suppose. I already carry my pillow with me when I travel, so that would be nothing new...thank goodness.ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 11:53 amHow are you positioning your head?clenchingtobreathe wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 10:16 amI KNOW I have been trying to hold my head on my pillow in a different way

Re: Does anyone use a special bed pillow?
I use two special bed pillows. I have the Facefit buckwheat pillow and the Amazon one with the mask cutouts. I use both most nights and enjoy them over my traditional pillows. The buckwheat is the better of the two in my opinion. I get to have both on the bed and roll freely between them because I am lucky enough to be single.

I use two CuddleDown down+feather "stomach" (under filled) pillows. They can be molded into the desired shape. Although CuddleDown can be pricey, the stomach sleeper versions are the cheapest for a given fill type, since they have the least fill.

Re: Does anyone use a special bed pillow?
I bought a small travel size memory foam pillow. Because of its small size, it is easy to adjust so it doesn't touch my cervical collar or the mask while already more or less on it. I think it is a little too thick for my neck, though, so will be looking for one about an inch thinner. Otherwise, it works pretty well.

Re: Does anyone use a special bed pillow?
I just use regular pillows, but sometimes sleep with my head near the edge, so the mask isn't pushed on by the pillow. works for me, other people do other things.clenchingtobreathe wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 10:16 amOK....so I was taught there ARE no stupid questions, so here I go....

Re: Does anyone use a special bed pillow?
Oh, my, that's exactly how I felt when I started using my machine. My neck was killing me in the morning. I finally bought a CPAPMax 2.0 pillow. It comes with 4 inserts so that I can decide how thick I want it to be. I ended up just removing the middle layer. It also has 2 different sides - one is harder and "breathes" (supposedly) and the other is fluffier (the side that I prefer). And, what makes it good for me is that there are semi-circles (half moons) cut out of each side where my mask "falls" - no more hugging the edge of the pillow for me! As has been said, pillows are particular to each of us, but I love my choice. Best.
