I Need a Quiet Travel CPAP

Post by jamesbadams » Mon Aug 13, 2018 9:51 am

In the last two years, I've purchased a Transcend and an AirMini travel CPAP. Both are intolerably noisy, with mask and machine noise unbearably loud. I use a bulky 10 year ole Res Med machine for daily use that I've now resorted to hauling around on trips. It is very quiet and I've come to rely on it for a good night's sleep. Why can't a travel CPAP be made that is equally quiet? Does anyone have a travel model that is quiet and portable?

I have a Dreamstation GO with battery as my travel machine, It's pretty noisy compared to my Resmed Airsense 10. I hear the Darth Vadar breathing, and using a fan for white noise blocks it out. I would suggest, a Resmed S9 without the humidifier would be quieter and about the same size as the GO is.

Get an S9 Autoset and travel without the humidifier...Small and quiet....or Get an S8 model which does not have the power block on the cord. The travel machine are small and have no insulation.

This! No such animal as a quiet travel machine.

Mine is advertised (Cpap.com) as a travel machine, but while it's a little smaller than some of the other 'regular' machines, it's super quiet, does everything the others do and I've used it every night at home for years and years. And if you get the module with it, it'll give lots of data.

I use a ResMed S9 AutoSet (without humidifier) for travel. Very small and very quiet.

I also use a ResMed S9 Adapt, without the humidifier, for travel. It is small, and I found a plastic container at Walmart which just fits the size of the S9. I found that many of these travel CPCP units were so small that they were squirley sitting on the nightstand. The slightest nudge of the hose and they were falling off the table.

I've got a Resmed Aircurve VAuto as my bedside machine and that is where it will probably stay.

I also have the S9 VPAP/BPAP Auto, plus the heated humidifier with climateline tubing. The S9 without the humidifier is quite small and fits easily into my travel backpack. It's not much bigger than the Resmed Airmini but the power brick does increase that size. If I include a heat moisture exchanger like the one sold for the Z1 HDM travel machine then it will meet my humidification needs for a long flight. All I have to do is put the H5i humidifier and it's tubing into my checked luggage and make sure I have the ordinary tubing in my backpack. This saves me carrying around my CPAP travel bag. The S9 will be the quietest machine I can use (as would the Airsense). The S9 is lower in height, has less length but a bit more depth than the Aircurve and that's without the Aircurve's humidifier chamber. You can take that chamber out and get a humidifier plate but it doesn't really reduce the length.

The Respironics Series One machines also have detachable humidifiers and are similar in dimensions to the S9. I have used one a few times on long haul (with the HME) and found it very easy to carry around.

While the travel machines are a bit smaller, they lack versatility and are incredibly noisy.

The bottom line for me is that I suffer from severe OSA, it needs to be treated and I've adapted my travel habits in a minor way to make sure my treatment will still work.

As it should. It is not at all travel friendly, and can't be used without the humidifier obviously.

VAuto/S9 VPAP Auto combo is the best of both worlds.

Well...technically the AirCurve/AirSense machines can be used without humidity but you don't gain much in size reduction by removing the water chamber and using the end plate which is available.
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... cover.html
And of course the water chamber can still be used with no water in it as long as the humidity is turned off so no heat to the chamber.

To my way of thinking you can have a tiny machine or a quiet machine but you can't find both in one machine.
Those tiny machines had to give up something to become tiny and sound absorption material was one of the things that got left by the wayside. Humidification is another thing that got left by the wayside and sacrificed for tiny. Yeah...there are those HME type of things that will give a person back some moisture but if a person needs much moisture it may not be sufficient.

So a person has to decide which is more important to them and make choices to accommodate whatever preferences and needs they might have. If noise is a major issue and a person doesn't have hearing aids that can be turned off....it's going to be extremely hard to find a quiet tiny machine. I don't know that one exists. The people that say that the noise doesn't bother them probably just aren't bothered by the noise in general. For people who find the machine noise annoying...tiny is unlikely going to be a viable option.
The biggest complaint I have seen about those tiny machines...machine motor noise.

The S9 would be smaller, but the AirCurve *can* be used without the humidifier. You can buy the ResMed side cover for using the AirCurve without the humidifier tank. You don't get rid of any of the wasted internal space, but the machine will be smaller to travel with, and quieter, if you don't have to haul a humidifier tank with you.

I take the "regular" CPAP. I need the humidification and the travel CPAPs are noisy.
