I think most cities will have an S9 or two listed for $200 or $250, and they would be a far better machine than an older S8. I use an S9 Autoset at home, and I found a used S9 autoset for my backup / travel machine. You can still have all the nice features and full data.

The S8 is compact and if you can find on with less than 10000 hours on it, it should last a few trips.
The main issues are that it uses a propriety card to read the data and the cards and reader are hard to find. My unit would max out in pressure in response to a large leak and then take forever to come back down. As a result I set my max pressure to just above what I needed and the problem went away. Using the S8 in "less than a controlled environment" may accelerate the corrosion to the contacts of the selector buttons. You may need to use multiple presses or a press and twist to make contact at times. If you search you can find a repair kit if that becomes an issue.
Other than that it was a great machine.

But, the S9 has an external transformer while the S8 has an internal transformer which appealed to samhandwich. Plus, he said he did not have the time to shop craigslist.zoocrewphoto wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 1:04 amI think most cities will have an S9 or two listed for $200 or $250, and they would be a far better machine than an older S8.

Don't feel bad...Secondwind also calls theirs S10.palerider wrote: ↑Sun Aug 05, 2018 5:14 pmI'm only a pedantic jerk about that because it can cause confusion to new people trying to look stuff up... they might think it's the "aircurve 10 S"... or not find as many references as they should, etc.Jas_williams wrote: ↑Sun Aug 05, 2018 3:07 pmCorrectI should have said Autoset 10

There are other misleading things in their listings too.LSAT wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 11:18 amDon't feel bad...Secondwind also calls theirs S10.palerider wrote: ↑Sun Aug 05, 2018 5:14 pmI'm only a pedantic jerk about that because it can cause confusion to new people trying to look stuff up... they might think it's the "aircurve 10 S"... or not find as many references as they should, etc.Jas_williams wrote: ↑Sun Aug 05, 2018 3:07 pmCorrectI should have said Autoset 10

Re: Recommendations for a non-travel CPAP for travel?
I liked my S8 APAP, it's now my travel machine (and second backup, I get freaked out thinking I might have a machine). I am very consistent in annual AHIs. On the S8 was 1.4; on the S9 APAP, average 0.1. I show many more hypops on the S8 -- just a heads up if you get and S8.

BUt it is severely over priced. I mean, if somebody is in such a hurry that they don't mind paying more for an old S8 than a much newer S9, then I guess that is their loss.ChicagoGranny wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 10:55 amBut, the S9 has an external transformer while the S8 has an internal transformer which appealed to samhandwich. But, they don't know if they like that machine. It does have an older algorithm and may not "feel" the same. It really isn't that much smaller. An older machine is more likely to fail. The internal transformer may fail, so external really is a better option.
Personally, ordering online and waiting for it to arrive could be longer than looking on craigsist and buying today or tomorrow.
But it really comes down to this for me - why is the older machine being sold at a price higher than the going price for the newer machine?
