flying Alitalia - cpap usage
What electrical (if any) connection(s) are available on an overnight flight from Atlanta to Venice on Alitalia?
Rookie cross-Atlantic traveler. Just got my new Transcend and curious if I need a battery on a long overnight flight.
Many thanks in advance!!

Only the airline can give you the definitive answer--if there is one.
Some airlines require you to bring battery power,
as your power requirements may exceed the outlet design on the plane.

i agree with CF, call the airline and ask. or it may be something you can find on the airlines website.
i'm not even sure it's standard across all airlines to have the same power supplies.

What is your actual routing and what are the airframes? Are you in business, premium economy or coach? Only Delta flies nonstop from ATL to VCE.

Our Alitalia flight shows as direct from Hartsfield to VCE on 8/21? I double-checked that a few minutes ago on the Alitalia website.
I will buy a Transcend battery to be on the safe side. Not that pricey...and better safe than sorry.
Thanks much!
edit -- Just noticed in the fine print on the Alitalia website that our direct flight from ATL to VCE *is* operated by Delta.[/b]

Re: flying Alitalia - cpap usage
I use the Transcend with a battery on overseas flights just to prevent any power issues. The only downside is having to haul the battery throughout Europe without the need to use it (don't forget the plug adapters!!).
Re: flying Alitalia - cpap usage
Interesting point. If you can power and charge up your laptop on the aircraft then your CPAP is no issue at all.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Wed Aug 01, 2018 1:41 pmOnly the airline can give you the definitive answer--if there is one.

But we hear of flight attendants with shirty attitudes every day.
It's the luck of the draw.

Re: flying Alitalia - cpap usage
I flew that airline last year, but I didn't use the CPAP on board. I did carry it though. I flew from JFK to Rome, and a connecting flight to Cagliari. The return trip - which was a daytime flight - was on Air France.
BTW, electricity in Europe is 220 volts 50hz, whereas US electricity is 110 volts 60hz. This is not likely to be an issue as almost all CPAPs (excpet very old ones) are compatible with either. Of course, you'll need to verify this. Any laptop or cell phone that you might be planning to take should be similarly compatible.
A more important compatibility issue is the shape of the plug. European (other than UK & Ireland) wall sockets accept two round pins whereas US wall sockets accept two flat pins. You'll need an adapter (but probably not a converter). There is a picture below (you can ignore the middle hole).
The one caveat about airplane electricity is sometimes it's 400hz (US is 60, Europe is 50).

Re: flying Alitalia - cpap usage
D.H., dear; airplane electricity is 400 volts where needed for aircraft systems.
Voltage at the seat is transformed down to that which will not destroy passengers' electronics.
Please try to keep up--or shut up.

Check here to see if there is power at your seat; https://www.seatguru.com/findseatmap/findseatmap.php
I have flown Lan Chile, KLM, Delta, Air Italia, Cathy Pacific, SAS and Emirates and they all had plugs in Business Class. No one said Boo about using my Apap including Emirates which says it cannot be used without a battery. YMMV.

Re: flying Alitalia - cpap usage
Actually, its 125 volts/400 hz. I don't think that this is what's at the seats, but you need to make sure. Alternatively, if it is, you need to verify whether your CPAP machine can handle it.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Fri Aug 03, 2018 3:00 pmD.H., dear; airplane electricity is 400 volts where needed for aircraft systems.

Re: flying Alitalia - cpap usage
Yes, some aircraft power supply systems are 400hz. However, my point about laptops still applies - especially if you are charging them.

OP, unless you are in the first 10 or so rows of Economy or business class you will not have a power port.
