Issues with breathing after CPAP for a year

Post by w_a_r_p_e_r » Sun Jul 29, 2018 7:26 am

I am writing this for my boyfriend, who uses the CPAP.

I don't have all the data or numbers, but he was diagnosed last year with severe apnea this time last year. During his initial sleep test, his O2 saturation got as low as 65%, and never higher than 86%. Before his mask - and still now, if he takes a nap without it - he will take one breath, then stop breathing for anywhere from 10 to 25 seconds before gasping almost awake. Over and over.

He has had his CPAP for almost a year now, and except for the few and far between restless night, he has slept peacefully. Until about two months ago, when even with his mask and machine on he's started occasional snoring working up to now, which is almost struggling to breathe every few minutes. The seal on his mask seems to fit well, and his machine is showing good reports on mask seal and humidifier.

Is this common? He hasn't mentioned having to have a followup appointment, should he be checking in regularly?

As someone fairly invested in keeping him alive, what questions should I be asking? What other information do I need to get?

His machine is a ResMed AirSense10. He has a full-face mask.

Assuming the profile is filled out correctly, this machine does provide basic statistics and should be compatible with SleepyHead. You will be able to see if his mask is fitting correctly and whether he's experiencing Apneic events.

Depending on what you find, you can change the pressure (even if you've been told the contrary).

No...while it does have limited data if that is what the machine is...it's not compatible with SH at this time.
SH will report that a brick is being used because the detailed data files that SH uses for even the AHI statistics on the left ..those files aren't available and the files that are available and would give the AHI and leak numbers SH doesn't know what to do with those.

To the OP...

ResScan is the only option when using the AirSense 10 CPAP

Need to go here and register and log in and find the secret post for how to request ResScan download.
https://www.apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap- ... tup-manual
But in all honesty all it will show is AHI averages...no category breakdown and average 95% leak numbers...which all of this is available on the machine LCD screen report.

ResScan's latest version is a PITA to use (worse than before) and there's really nothing useful to be gained by using it that is worth the headache.

As to why he is now not doing as well as he did before...
anything change...sleeping position change maybe?? On his back more???
Change in medications maybe???
Put on some weight maybe??

Congratulations to your bf. He stuck to it. It is nice to see you two working together on this.

Pugsy's information is excelent.

Just another thought, since it seems his machine can't give much information, he should probably go back to his doctor. If you could record the sounds he makes, the doctor would have to listen. Perhaps he would order another titration study or just wing it and give you another pressure.

Depending on his medical insurance situation, that could cost $$$. Balance that with buying a better machine on Amazon or Second Wind and optimizing pressures through a combination of data, sleepyhead and forum members assistance.
