New to C-pap

Post by Tcowe648 » Wed Jul 25, 2018 8:59 am

I'm new to c-pap. I am starting to get a cold. I use a nose cushion mask. I felt like I was having a hard time breathing. Woke up with mouth dry as all get out. What can I do.

If you use a humidifier (esp. at a higher setting) try not using it for a couple of nights - it's a comfort thing, not 'mandatory' therapy, and if you're already in a high humidity climate you may not need it - could cause congestion and cold symptoms.

Google cpap rhinitis.

You might be thinking it is a cold but it might be related to the humidity setting. Symptoms are similar.
You might need more or less humidity if that's what is happening. Humidity needs vary widely and it just something you have to figure out what your nasal mucosa needs.

Now if you are indeed coming down with a cold and have the usual cold symptoms you treat it like you would any other cold with whatever OTC meds work. Oral decongestants maybe...or some saline nasal spray...or some Flonase or even maybe a tiny bit of Afrin to open up the nose if nothing else works.
If you do end up trying the Afrin...minimal use and a tiny amount and be careful that you don't end up getting Afrin Rebound.

If it is really a cold...when I get a cold I crank up that humidifier because the added moisture seems to help. Think how a hot steamy shower might help with nasal congestion and other symptoms of a cold.
