redness on bridge of nose

Post by moosie » Sun Jul 22, 2018 11:10 am

I have a Resmed Airfcurve 10. Since I just got a replacement full face mask after 6months of use I have developed a large red spit on the bridge of my nose. It itches as well. I do have a latex allergy but never had this problem occur with my previous masks. Has Res Med changed something about their masks. Anything I can do to solve this problem. I contacted my supplier but they say it is the same mask I have been using all along. I seem to be itching in other areas as well. I went back to using my old mask and the redness is starting to go away. Is there any kind of pad I could wear between my nose and the mask? Any ideas???

There is NO LATEX in any cpap equipment--AT ALL. (Unless you find something over 20 years old.)
Wash the new cushion thoroughly. Contact dermatitis can result from impurities on surfaces.
Your skin or your mask. Clean thoroughly.
Mask liners, like those from pad a cheek, should help stop the rash.

I got a red mark on my nose and "dents" on either side of it when I started with the nasal mask. Bought some liners (CPAP.com, but probably lots of places carry them) and both the red mark and dents are gone. Best.

Ok, here it goes (again).

Soak the part of the mask in question in 50% vinegar solution for three or more hours. This seems to reduce the allergic properties of the mask.

I recommend you use a band aid on your nose at night until the redness goes away, then either use a piece of moleskin on your nose, or use a mask liner.

I think you left off a really important part: cleaning with vinegar requires through rinsing.

The ResMed institutional guides for mask sanitizing require a 5x rinse after washing with disinfectant, IIRC. I'd think the same practice might be wise in this case.

It's hard to know if your vinegar trick does anything at all in regards to allergens that cause contact dermititis, and if it does, it could be the rinsing that actually does anything rather than the vinegar solution. Post hoc doesn't mean propter hoc.

Here's what ResMed says about your suggestion:
We recommend that your patients use natural or pure products/solutions to clean their mask, as the residual vapours that are left behind from non-natural cleaners can be inhaled if not rinsed very thoroughly...

Your patients should avoid using:

Aromatic-based solutions, Eucalyptus oil, essential oils, scented oils
Antibacterial soaps
Detergents (even if they are mild or include some natural ingredients)
Alcohol
Vinegar
Soaps with citrus scents

I'm not saying you are wrong, and I've seen vinegar recommended elsewhere, but I would say that using vinegar is something that the maker says not to do. I presume they have some sound reason for that, but that is a presumption and I don't know what their reasons are. And, saying not to use detergents? That seems a bit odd to me. So, dunno.

They have masks now that go over your mouth, but the cushion part has an opening that rests on the bottom of your nose.
