Best bed

Post by carojae » Tue Jul 10, 2018 1:13 am

Hello sleep experts,

i am sick of my bed. It's one of those memory form, gel top, too expensive beds that lured us into a purchase with the salesman telling us all this bs about how it is so good. It never did feel like a "good" bed. It's too soft and my neck is always sore and my back shouldn't be in that bowl shape all night long.
My interest in this subject peaked when I recently had another sleep study and the clinic had a "sleep numbers bed" complete with a remote for me to use. I fell asleep before I tried to adjust the numbers (what ever that is).
Is there a go-to bed that is accepted by most as "a good bed"? I realize everyone is different but are these sleep numbers beds the way to go (do you think)?
I paid some 3k for this last bed so I am not exactly going to just go buy another without some checking around first.
What do you think?

Jim

"sleep number" beds are a really fancy air mattress. Some people love 'em, some people hate 'em.

I've had a waterbed for nearly 40 years.

I haven't paid even a fraction of 3k for the bed and the two replacement mattresses I ended up having to have. (yes, I poked a hole in the first one with an errant screw.)

I got my waterbed when I was in high school, so about 30 years now. I have replaced the heater and mattress once. I guess they aren't very popular since people are surprised when they hear that is what I have. I love it. Very comfy. I also tend to sleep with a lot of blankets since I like to be warm. And no, the cats do not poke holes in it.

Most hotels when I travel have beds that seem really hard to me. I tend to get a sore back or hip. I know the sleep lab did have a sleep number bed. No idea what it was set to. I never looked at the remote, forgot I could change it, and I did sleep really well.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Viscoelastic ‘memory’ foam. Re: Best bed

I grew up with a waterbed under the stars, in the backyard, in the Sixties. That’s probably the best location for a good waterbed, where it does not overload modern construction limitations. I tried them off and on through my early life but was always worried by the tender floors that they caused. They are impossible to clean to my current standards. (IIRC California King is 6’ x 7’ x 1’ = 42 ft^3 x 60 lbm/ft^3 water is 2500 pounds. I believe modern floor loading standard is 40 lbm/ft^2)

As soon as Tempur-Pedic® came on the market, early Ninties, my parents got one. As soon as I could afford one I got one, and, twenty years later, we are still pleased with it. We use the viscoelsatic temperature effect to our advantage, my wife prefers a warmer and softer bed and mattress, while I prefer cold and firm. We use a two control mattress pad as the sole heat source in our bedroom, her side set considerably warmer than mine.

With the resurgence of bedbugs, Cimex lectularius (my first training was in entomology), I would be interested in a correlation with bed construction and ease of cleaning.
The conspiracy of ignorance masquerades as common sense.

Some years ago, Consumer Reports did a comprehensive study on mattresses. They concluded that mattress choice is so personalized, a person cannot know which mattress they like until they have slept on it a few nights.

I'm thinking for my next mattress I might get one of those they ship to you folded up in a box. If it turns out I don't like it after sleeping on it for a few weeks, they have a 100% refund policy and send someone to pick it up.

Be very diligent when researching the Sleep Number mattress'. I read a lot of reviews claiming they were not all they're claiming to be due to the fact that they are air bladders. It seems this can be very comfortable to some, as long as it holds the air to the proper "number". Most complaints were that they just didn't hold up well after a while.

We researched mattress' extensively before buying our most recent one. We ended up going with what's called a hybrid which combines the support of a pocketed coil innerspring and at least 2" of memory foam. Our choice was a medium firmness level which turned out to be perfect for our tastes. The motion isolation feature is nice too, since we get up at different times. This was the perfect combination for us coupled with the adjustable base. It sleeps much cooler than any mattress we've ever had, too. Living in South Florida ( aka "sweltering Hell-Hole") I need all the help that I can get cooling off at night.

I have a cousin that sells mattresses and he claims the tempur-pedic mattresses are the best in terms of comfort and how long they last, and hold up the same firmness. Obviously they are expensive.

I myself use a Sealy that is a hybrid spring and memory foam mattress and I like it a lot. I use the Sealy essential line.

The story of the Princess and the Pea, comes to mind. Mattresses and Pillows and Cpap stuff are more in the eye of the user. The Masses opinions aren't yours. As you say you took the salesmans opinion, and it didn't turn out well. Make a list if the features you like in a product, then check them out, hands on. Jim

My wife and I have a split queen, adjustable bed with a medium soft memory foam mattress. We have had the bed for around ten years. Each side can be adjusted independent of the other.

Well, actually, it wasn't very interesting.

I had a packet of drywall screws that'd been sitting on the headboard for no good reason, and one of 'em fell down between the frame and the mattress... first I noticed was when the rug was damp. I should have just patched the mattress... but I got a newer, cheaper one.

got one of those. a Casper brand to be exact. it's fairly comfortable but imho it's not much to get excited about.

that return policy actually works to their advantage. it's said that most people won't return something after they've had it that long. i don't have anything to back that up. just something i remember hearing on a podcast.

as always, ymmv.....
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

The only thing I won't return is food in a restaurant. You never know what the chef will put in the replacement dish he sends out. Blechh.
