How high is an AHI of 102.0 really?

Post by mileena » Sun Jul 01, 2018 12:20 pm

Attached is my sleep study report from last year.

I know 102 for an AHI is high, but I am just curious how high is it really, percentile-wise? Like for the LSAT (Law School Admission Test), I scored at the 99.6 percentile overall. My doctor also said that at my weight of 435 lb., I am the highest of any patient in the practice. Everything I do is to the extreme.

And why was my sleep efficiency from the report below lower with a CPAP than without it?

Then, why did you ask if it was high?

This is truly meaningless, unless you're just looking for some amusing "mine's bigger than yours" game.

I've heard of much higher AHI's, though nothing as high as double.

Probably because of the disturbing effects of the cpap, something you weren't used to, would be my guess.

Because I forgot to revise my title before hitting "submit". I am not sure if I can edit a title, but I will check.

I agree. I am weird though, and it guess I feel it must validate me in some way. I researched it and some guy had an AHI in the 200 range.

Some things, you really shouldn't try to beat the competition...

If you want something more meaningful, then do some research, find the average distribution of tested AHI's and see where you fit on the curve.

Still, meaningless, since all that matters is what your AHI is during treatment... but maybe it'll scratch one of your intellectual itches.

Maybe I place less significance on untreated AHI than others, because I never had a sleep test, I knew I had a problem, and I knew what the solution would be, and I went straight to that.

You are 100% correct. Sometimes I hate it when things become a game or competition for me. A high AHI or weight is nothing to be proud of.

You got a CPAP machine or similar without a sleep test?

The only contact I've had with doctors regarding sleep apnea was to volunteer "I use a cpap".

With an AHI of 102, you stop breathing every 35 seconds....I would consider that serious...wouldn't you?

APneas must be 10 seconds or longer to qualify. So, an ahi of 102 means that you are not breathing for at least 1020 seconds of every hour (3600 seconds). That means you are definitely not breathing for 28 % of the night. Sounds pretty darn bad. And that is the lowest possible time for each event.

Not the highest possible, but seriously dangerous to your health.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Yes, this is clearly very severe! I had half that and they sounded the alarm and elevated my study ahead of all the others. It was supposed to take six weeks until they scored the study, but they called the next day and said it was an "emergency."

The tormentors have arrived. I was concerned about the lack of responses to D.H.'s posts.

It doesn't.

We are all different--only a few are special.
Fewer still are recognized as such by anyone but their mothers.
Your mom is right--but so is everybody else's.
