Flossing my teeth suddenly painful.

Post by Allessio77 » Mon Jun 25, 2018 4:34 pm

I knew things were going too smoothly.

I have been using APAP for 6 months with success and very little in the way of problems. My AHI is low, my leaks are 0%, don't have dry mouth or any discomfort and use my device for about 7 hours per night.

Two days ago, I notice when flossing that my gums were very sensitive to the floss. Felt like a little knife cutting into each gum. No blood, just pain. It was like this with every tooth, top and bottom.

I use the F20 FFM, and a Dr Dakota cervical collar. I also rinse with ACT Dry Mouth Rinse before putting on my gear.

I highly suspect this has something to do with my therapy, but I am not completely sure. I have not had a dental problem in 15 years.

Anybody else experience this or have some suggestions.

I don't want this pain: I don't want to stop flossing, and certainty I don't want to lose any teeth!!

Go talk to your dentist.
Not every discomfort or bad thing that happens to us is related to cpap therapy no matter how much we might want to blame cpap.

If that was the case then my annoying overlapping toe syndrome would be blamed on cpap.

Yes, I will certainly do this if it persists but I was just at the dentist for cleaning and exam not 2 weeks ago, and he didn't say anything about my gums except to marvel at the fact I had no periodontal disease. Of course, I was not in any pain 2 weeks ago.

Does that fact that it is painful in my entire mouth suggest anything?

Sorry, I have no idea what might be causing gum pain throughout the whole mouth only when flossing.
Just because you didn't have a problem 2 weeks ago doesn't mean something couldn't have developed recently.
Think about the guy who has the heart attack right after getting a nice clean EKG. Stuff happens and sometimes quickly.

It's called getting old. My first suggestion is to see your dentist. Second, make a habit for the next couple of days to rinse your mouth well with a salt rinse. If bacteria is the problem, that often helps. A third possibility is that you have a sinus infection (which surprisingly, can affect all your teeth and not just your upper ones). Finally, have you changed the straps on your mask recently or purchased a new mask? If you have it too tight, it can cause all sorts of problems.

Are you suddenly mouth breathing or doing any other thing that could bring sudden onset of gum pain?

I second the idea of seeing your dentist to rule out anything obvious.

Whenever I have a sore area of gum or anything else in the mouth, I use a technique called "oil pulling". I put about 1 tsp of coconut oil in my mouth and swish it around for 10 to 15 minutes. DO NOT SWALLOW--spit it out when the time is up.

It sounds crazy but it really does help soothe gum inflammation, mouth sores, etc., and speed healing. Even my very skeptical husband tried it out of desperation and found it really helped.

See your DOCTOR.
Sudden symptoms like this are too often a sign of a serious condition.
Get on the phone. Make an appointment.

I don't know your age but I started getting dental pain in my 40s. It has improved with bioidentical HRT. I take DHEA in particular. It has also put my Fibromyalgia into remission as long as I take my 5mg daily. HTH.

NB Are your gums red or bleeding? If so, it can be helpful to take a multivitamin. Some vitamins (C; D; zinc) help maintain healthy gums and teeth.

After about 5 days, my gum pain has diminished. I don't know what it was. The only things I changed in my daily routine were that I rinsed more often with ACT Dry Mouth Mouthwash, used a Xylimelt one night, and was very careful in flossing (to be gentle). I am hoping that is was some passing inflammation and will not return.

I appreciate all the comments.
