Dreamwear FFM Leaks in middle of night

Post by 2bsubc » Fri Jun 22, 2018 11:57 am

Hello everyone, I am a new user to this world after being diagnosed and am now 6 days into my use with my machine and mask.

Some critical info; my machine is a Bipap ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto and I was given a Dreamwear FFM. I am currently in a size medium frame and medium padding (good term?). My machine was set up for me when i picked it up from DME. I have it set to ramp to pressure over a 30 min time frame, my programmed pressures are 13/17 (cm h20).

So here's my problem: I am still not used to the wearing of the mask......it was fitted while i was sitting in a lounge chair at the DME's office in the middle of the day but in reality when i sleep i am suffering from leaks (flutters) around the bottom mouth areas (either left or right sides) as i am a side sleeper that moves in the night and changes sides. I have also observed that seal will lift if I take a little on back position. The leaks are really predominant after the system ramps up to full pressure plus i have noticed that when I start to drift off my jaw kinda relaxes and i can only assume that this is contributing to the breaking of the mask seal.

The leaks wake me and are really annoying and it has only been getting worse since night #2. Thinking that the mask is too loose I broke down and tightened the lower straps last night to secure/stop the leak but I am not sure that this worked as the software reported that the leak rate was above 40 L/min (no myAir points for last night!!...lol).

I'm at a loss, I really want to like this Dreamwear FFM and i'm hoping that i can get some assistance with this?

Thank you!!

For the jaw drop problem, you can try either a chin strap, or a firm foam cervical collar. I have tried both and prefer the firm foam cervical collar.

I had the same problem and gave up, although I really wanted this to be THE ONE...I switched to a ResMed F20 with memory foam seal and had an excellent night last night.

i realize this is an older thread, but i bought the dreamwear ffm and have been sleeping with it for a couple of nights
im also having the problem of leaks while side sleeping
but the leak seems to come from the nose area
the mask fits me fine as far as i can tell
the air also comes into my mouth sometimes with this mask
i actually had to switch back to my quattro mask last night
that i dont think even fits me because i woke up a couple of times with nasal area leaking

ResMeds and Dream Station machines have "mask fit" features. I think it's called something different in the Dream Station.

So put on your mask and lie down in your normal sleeping position and use that feature which will allow you to fit the mask at your maximum pressure. Tighten the straps just enough to stop leaking in that position at that pressure, no more. Then resume normal settings. That should take care of the issue of the mask fit when the pressure goes high.

It's important to learn how to fit the mask yourself in your normal sleeping position. See my blog posts for "Taming the Mirage Quatrro" which works for any air cushion FF mask, and "Swift FX Fitting Tips" for nasal type masks.

The Dreamwear mask is a little different as it can stand to be a little tighter than a nasal pillow mask. And if you wake to leaks, just tug or push on it a bit to get it to re-seal.
