10yo SA post surgery on CPAP

Post by Morganna » Sat Jun 09, 2018 10:32 am

Hey I'm not new to this but I am with my son who started his CPAP therapy almost two weeks ago. He is not obese and had his tonsils & adenoids removed with no results. I had to push for the initial sleep study bc he was up all hours of the night and showing affects of ADHD. Doc said to test for ADHD and I wanted ss first. Surprise he has SA.
Anyway, I have the app that tells me how well he is sleeping. He is sleeping more than ever with the machine but his mood is terrible during the day. He seems exhausted. Is this just his brain healing? He has never slept well. Anyone have experience with the beginning of pediatric therapy with similar results? Will he feel better soon?
Sorry if this was already asked. I searched the fora and didn't find these questions.

The MyAir app gives only a general idea of how the CPAP is working.
The important things from MyAir for therapy are the "Events per Hour", usually called AHI, and the "Mask Seal".
Although the medical community considers Events number below 5 as treated, lower is usually better.

Many of us here use the free SleepyHead software to read data from the SD Card in your son's machine to get more details on the therapy.

Although there are guidelines based on numbers, there is also a personal comfort factor that can affect sleep. For instance, in my case, if the minimum pressure too high, my sleep quality suffers even though my numbers may be acceptable.

What are his pressure settings - they may just be too low? Does he use the ramp feature?

If he takes meds for ADHD, they could be fighting with Cpap and should be discussed with his MD.

The first question is whether he is in any way "resistant" to CPAP usage. If not, I would say that's a good indication that it's working; or at least he's getting better sleep than he did without.

My other suggestion is thast you analyze his sleep using SleepyHead.

When you educate yourself on this matter don't forget to educate him! He will probably have to use this into adulthood; perhaps even into his senior years. If that sounds bad, think of it as enabling him to have an adulthood and senior years!

Likely not into senior years... technology is changing rapidly and it's quite likely many of us even 'old' now, will not have to use Cpap forever... certainly anyone 'young' now is highly unlikely to do it.

First, let's figure out what equipment he is actually using. In your equipment profile is a ResMed machine and a Respironics humidifier - two different manufacturers. ResMed makes four AirSense 10 models - https://sleep.tnet.com/cmd.class?class=as10. Check and let us know which he actually has.

Second, How old is your son?

It's possible he is staying in bed longer, but still not sleeping well. The apps provide limited information to measure the effectiveness of CPAP. Let's see which machine he actually has. If it records full data, we can better judge how effective his therapy is.

I think that 10yo means 10 years old.
Especially since he recently has the tonsils removed. That is usually the first line of therapy for children with OSA.

 I'm embarrassed to say how I interpreted that in a quick read.

Downloading and using sleepyhead will give you a lot more information.

You might also want to consider getting him a Fit Bit with heart rate monitoring if it's feasible, because that will give you an idea of sleep quality.
