Oxygen concentrator question

Post by Woody » Fri Jun 01, 2018 11:44 am

I have to use oxygen at night with my cpap. I don't like the noise that
the compressor makes and like a few others have opted to put the
concentrator in another room. What about the nights I want to read in
bed before I go to sleep? I sort of hate to get up out of bed, walk into
the room with the concentrator just to turn it on. The only idea I have
come up on is a remotely controlled power outlet. Anyone have a better
solution ?

House Robot with a finger! Wife! A outlet device won't turn it on, unless you wire it in directly into the on-off switch. I'm sure they make a computer controlled appliance rated switch that will do the job, but as I said you will need to rewire the switch on the compressor. Cheaper than the House Robot with a finger! Wife!

X-10 used to make products like that, that plugged into the house wiring, but it took a appliance module to cover the motor use. I have lots of X-10 stuff even that but don't have a computer with a serial port for the interface, I'm sure they make something network controlled. Might check Google and New Egg. com. Jim

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 4UB6SN7958, This is my idea but they do NOT list a spec for current draw. Also I was thinking unplug and turn on your O2 pump, then plug it in , see if it starts and runs, if so you might get by without messing with the switch rewiring. Just a idea.

I use these for some outside Christmas lights - https://www.homedepot.com/p/Woods-13-Am ... wQodD7UKeg

You need to check the rating against your concentrator. The rating (Ratings: 125-Volt/13-Amp, 1625-Watt resistive/8-Amp, 1000-Watt Tungsten) may not be high enough for your unit.

I think that would be better than the one I listed. WOOD makes some quality stuff. My O2 pump is a big heavy "TANK" it uses 4.3 amp, to 5 amp, I doubt if many use more than that maybe 10 LPM units or filling units. Just would need a unit that could be started by plugging in while switch is turned on. If you don't own it you can't rework the switch.

Nice Catch, ChicagoGranny, I wrote down the link, might have a use for one... Jim

WARNING: One Problem I see, it says it's remote transmits thru walls, but it also says photocell. photocell means it has to have line of sight to remote..... I don't think you can have your cake and eat it too. If the remote is RF ok, LED NO!

I have two that are used outside at Christmas. The remote works from a couple of rooms away inside the house.

As long as the remote doesn't have to see the switch. If the remote's light doesn't find a window. Some remotes are very bright, even though we can't see UV. I had a camera recording in a darkroom and changed the channel on a t.v,, the recorded flash was blinding.

It's RF. The outside unit has a photocell. You can set it to "On", and the photocell will .... well, you know.

That makes it even nicer.

Depending on the concentrator, this won't work... because they've got power failure alarms in some (all?) of them. (I know, I tried, that damn thing's LOUD). Try unplugging yours when it's running.... if you don't get a loud alarm, then a remote switch will work for you.

I'm working up a project to do remote control of the one here, which will take opening it up (again) and wiring in a relay to the switch to turn it on remotely... and then I'm thinking of putting a pressure sensor in the cpap line, so that when the cpap comes on, it automatically triggers the relay in the concentrator to turn it on... and off when the cpap shuts off.... but, still in the 'planning' stage.

there are alot of cheap junky concentrators out there. you don't have to settle for a loud one. go to the dme and tell them you want a quieter one. if they can't satisfy you, visit other dme's and find a quieter one. then have your doc d/c the current concentrator and send an order to the new dme for the quieter one. my wife has visionaire that is literally 3 feet from the head of the bed and doesn't bother either one of us.

The quietest ones that I know of are the Respironics EverFlo Q and the Invacare Perfecto 2... we've got the Perfecto2 running here, it's not silent, I can hear a muted 'thump' every few seconds as it cycles... but it's easy to sleep through.

When I used a concentrator for almost one year, it was right next to our bed and the noise did not bother either one of us. To me, it was just a little bit of white noise. Of course, both of use hearing aids and don't hear much of anything with out them.

Have you tried contacting the company who manufacture's the concentrator? Their tech department can tell you of any pitfalls with your plans. I actually like the thump thump-thump, but I get that some would find it irritating (my Mom did).

I would be worrying more about life spand, the new ones they brought me, were smaller used less electric, first one wouldn't run out of the box, next one sounded like it had gravel in the compressor. They put in a Invacare Platinum XL (Tank), it noisy, uses lots of electric, makes a lots of heat, and just keeps running. So I put it in the next room close the door and pay the electric bill. Works for me!

It seams like old and big beats new everytime. Jim
