Getting MORE tired during sleep

Post by Chalkie » Wed May 23, 2018 2:55 am

I have nights sometimes where I go through a period of sleep where I seem to be getting MORE tired as I sleep.

Last night was one such night. These episodes are invariably accompanied by dreams where I feel exhausted and am desperate for sleep but something or someone is keeping me awake.

Anyone else get these?

I am trying to identify a trigger. My best guess is that last night I ate later than normal and the meal contained a fair proportion of carbs. I am wondering if the metal was sitting heavy on my stomach and triggered the episode,w which happened about 1.30am.

It sounds like you may be having more events on those nights. Does your machine tell you the ahi each night? Can you use the Encore software to see what was going on?

A heavy meal could also affect acid reflux if you have problems with that. I have found that I usually need more pressure if I have taken a muscle relaxer, or if I need to sleep on my back more. I also have more problems when my allergies or asthma are bad, or if I have a bad cold. That is usually covered in my normal pressure range, so I don't have to adjust anything. I just see higher pressures on those nights. If I have a bad cough, I do have to raise my minimum.

Back before cpap, I would have bad dreams of being chased. After my sleep study and before getting my machine, I had a dream that the doctor wouldn't see me for 6 months, and I would have to wait for the machine. I was angry as I wanted one now. Shortly after getting my machine, I took the mask off in the middle of the night. I had a dream that I was in a building, carrying my cpap around, looking for a power outlet so that I could use my machine. Even in my sleep, my brain knew the machine wasn't on.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

I used to have lots of dreams prior to being optimally treated with CPAP and clearly recall (especially just before being diagnosed) as if I never actually slept but just dreamt all night. Definitely not restful sleep! Now I rarely recall dreams.

I agree with Zoocrew that it would be very useful to check your AHI and data to try to see what is going on with your treatment. I am not familiar with your machine but see your note in your signature that you can't use Sleepy Head.

Do you eat lots of carbohydrates normally or was last night an exception?

I don't normally eat such huge amounts of carbs- - just normal amounts I guess.

I think it was more to do with the smaller gap between eating and sleep.

And I agree these "hyper-tired" episodes are probably periods with a lot of events going on. I have also had a minor cold lately so maybe that was part of it.

I just posted a question about increasing my minimum pressure. I had not been sleeping really good and found that I was having more events than usual. I had a dream that I only had an hour to go before my alarm went off and that I hadn't slept in my dream. I was really tired when I woke up.

Definitely try to finish eating several hours before going to bed, especially if you appear to be having issues. Also, avoid any caffeinated beverage or chocolate after noon.

You machine is not compatible with Sleepyhead (per your won statement), but it is probably compliant with some other reporting tool.

It's compliant with Encore pro, but I just cannot get it to work on my computer. If you can suggest any other reporting tools that would work, I'd be intertested to hear.
