When I began CPAP a year ago, I went through a period where I was feeling horrible every day. I know it was because the mask and leaks and mouth leaking were waking me up more thoroughly than the apnea ever had. In the year of treatment, I still have days when I feel bad and I know I had a fitful night. Once in a while I sail through a night with no waking at all. It's a hard treatment, but better than "dying peacfully in his sleep" some night. I'll frequently catch an hour or so after 3AM without the gear an have lots of dreams. Bummer.

I would suggest monitoring your son's sleep while on CPAP to see if mask fit problems might be a big part of his difficulties. You will be able to hear the change when leaks are occurring sufficient to disrupt treatment.

Good Luck,

TerryB

Hi KSmom,

I am pretty much in agreement with TerryB. I can't help but wonder if problems with the mask are causing his sleep (as little as it might be) to become even more disrupted. I know as a grown person it is sometimes difficult to sort out what the problem is and how to fix it, at 12 it would have been near impossible. As "hard" as he sleeps, he is likely oblivious to the problems he's having in the wee hours. Sometimes it has taken me a bit of lousy sleep to be able to recall the nights events and realize that I am tossing and turning and fussing with headgear that is leaking and that why I feel lousy. If you have some way to monitor his sleep thru the night that may help.

before cpap treatments I could sleep anywhere, during anything. I think the most shoking thing I remember looking back is when I slept thru Lord of the rings in surround sound! I am grateful that those days are just a memory.

Hang in! Momming is a hard gig, most of us just make it look easy most of the time . Don't underestimate the efforts, it can be hard work. Bless 'em they are worth it!
