Too tight?

Post by UncleLeo » Mon Jan 29, 2007 11:13 pm

Is it possible to have a nasal mask too tight? I don't mean about leaving marks or cutting circulation, but could a seal be "too good" and somehow be not as effective as having a small occasional leak.

I ask because last night I tightened my headgear and it sealed very well. It almost felt like there was no air pressure, yet I was breathing well and if I lifted the mask air was obviously rushing out.

Hi Uncle Leo,

I think it depends on the mask and the shape of your face. I use a Swift II and if I have it too tight I can't get a good seal. I have to have it so that it almost feels too loose but then the pillows have some give in them and they seal better that way.

Pedro, Uncle Leo's saying he DID get a good seal.

Uncle Leo - that's how it's SUPPOSED to feel, congratulations. As long as there is air coming out of the exhaust ports, that's the only leak you should (ideally) have. Sounds like your mask is adjusted correctly. Good job!

Hi Uncle Leo,

Sorry if my post was confusing. I was commenting about tightness in general. If you have no leaks that's perfect. The reason it feels like there is no pressure is because you're used to it. Sometimes I wake up and think I'd better put my mask on! CollegeGirl is right, that's the way it's supposed to be, I'm glad she's on the ball.

Cheers

Peter
