Cost of PSG testing

Post by dataq1 » Thu Jan 11, 2007 12:10 pm

Based on the remarks here, PSG tests are *very* costly.
So I thought I'd look up my sleep study testing. The hospital charged $2800, and accepted $1054 as payment in full. The $1054 was my insurance campany's allowance (code 0740). This did not include interpretation.
How does this comapre with other forum member's experience?

mine was billed in 2 parts: PSG $373 and 'other Dx services": $1356, for a total of $1729. Insurance discounted it to $255 and $ 881, for a total of $1136. Like yours, this doesn't include consultation with sleep doc afterwards.

it is been several years since my last one but I recall insurance paying close to $1700 for each one, then another $570 for the interpretation of the study by a doctor.

Heck, I could have come here and saved the insurance $570 bucks and gotten better answers.

My case:
PSG charged 2800 , insurance paid in full 1054
Interpretation charged 500, insurance paid in full 173.

My sleep lab billed $1650 for polysomnography w/CPAP for my titration study [95811) and Medicare approved $850.27 and paid $680.22.

My follow up w/my sleep pulmonologist was billed at $110.00. Medicare approved $80.51 and paid $64.41.

The DME billed
$ 48 for the hose [A7037]
$325 for the Humidiaire 3i heated humidifier [E0562]
$ 45 for the Swift headgear [A7035]
$130 for the Swift mask [A7034]
$ 70 for heated breathing circuit [A4604] (which was then scratched off but the $70 was still included in the total)
$618 Total

and then an additional $135 for the monthly rental of the Resmed S8 Elite [E0601].
They also billed the loaner AutoPap at $135 and as [E0601]

I don't have statements from Medicare yet on the PSG and PAP equipment yet.

I can say that my sleep lab staff and pulmonologist have been absolutely great. The sleep lab manager knows more about mask fitting than the DME's RT.

I was quoted about $1,600 by my lab for walk-in fee (non-insurance). I'd expect the insurance company has a negotiated cost that's lower.

I just looked up mine.

Amount billed: $1835.00
Allowable charges: $1244.23

AND, for one of the dufuses that read my sleep study:

Amount billed: $587.00
Allowable charges: $284.49

Still makes me wonder why the difference in what they bill and what they accept......if they KNOW what the limits are.

Mine was $2,564.75, all covered by insurance. This didn't include a consultation afterwards.

My insurance would not cover it. So I paid $1,000 cash. This was for a PSG and technician to come to my house. This also included the doctor's evaluation.

It has cost me $3,600 out of pocket to treat my sleep apnea. Expensive, but so far it is going well.

Telly, whoever loves you, it is for certain it is not your DME.
They love people like you who are willing to pay the full tab.

They will continue to do this because so many do not do their homework and shell out their hard earned money.

But then again, they DO love you.
