If you are thinking our most recent departed/banned member...I don't think it is him.
First big and prolonged Asian attack was last May or very early June (I forget exactly when) and at that time the alphabet boy had only been here (at least registered) since April and his true colors weren't being shown yet.
Like you I don't think he is smart enough but I do remember one that probably is smart enough.
Why he would decide to do this now is beyond me though....if it is him.

This is definitely an targeted attack though for whatever reason. Most spammers come and post a few BS spam posts and leave. They don't try to take over like this guy/bot does. This guy is wanting to disrupt things big time. He also knows that it will get remove and does it just to annoy us and cause more work for someone.

If they are smart enough to read English, they are getting off with all the uproar comments about their success, same as the News and T.V. coverage of the Shootings in the U.S.A. only cause more shootings for warped Fame. Americans aren't smart enough to see it, or able to control their own thoughts. Weak dumb people have to voice their opinions, as if they matter, they just keep the ball rolling! Jim

Would it be possible to automatically block any posting containing Korean characters? At the moment it's only Korean, but maybe at some point other non-western characters would need to also be blocked.

I just ran this..........edited out the Chinese characters.....
which was the topic of one of the spams through 3 different online translators and in all 3 it said it was Chinese.

Plus I did a quick Google search for the Chinese topic above and I got hits for many, many forums where apparently they got spammed also and recently and of course all the links said "page not found".
Probably more were attacked but simply totally removed the crap so it won't show up with any hits.

Later this evening I will edit the above copied topic so that it no longer will show up here. I don't want to give it long term press coverage....so later tonight I will remove the Chinese characters.

So we aren't the only place it has visited and maybe a butthead and not a former member.

Probably was a targeted attack, however it may have been targeting the out-of-date software the site was using since it was likely vulnerable (aka - the door was wide open). With the update, there's more tools to use to prevent the attacks from disrupting the forum if they're set up properly. Here's another that was under consideration:
